LIBYA today threw its weight in the local and international effort to help Kilosa District come to terms with the devastating floods that have left thousands of people homeless, destroyed the infrastructure and caused an extension of school holidays.

The North African country has donated various relief items worth more than 1bn/- for the victims of the floods and promised to build 200 houses worth 1.3bn/- for the displaced persons.

Great Socialist People?s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya Ambassador to Tanzania Mr Ahamed Abdulasalaam said during the presentation ceremony that his country has been deeply touched by the human misery caused by the continuing rains and the floods.

He attributed the relief support to the good relations between his country and Tanzania, promising that his country will continue supporting Tanzania, especially during this period of calamities.

?Although we know that many people are suffering due to floods in many parts of the country; we think that the situation in Kilosa District is more serious and that is why we have decided to give this support to the victims in the district," the ambassador observed.

The assistance includes 1,100 sleeping beds, 400 blankets, 1,300 tents, 1,200 pillows and 100 First Aid kits.

Receiving the aid on behalf of the government of Tanzania, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister?s Office, Policy, Co-ordination and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Philip Marmo, appreciated the support, promising that the donations would reach the intended victims.

Mr Marmo said the first items, which arrived on January 14, this year, had already been sent to Kilosa where the flood victims have already received them. He reported that the second consignment will be transported tomorrow and the items supplied to the victims on the same day.

?We have received this assistance in two consignments; the first arrived on January 14 and the second on January 16, this year. What I can assure you is that the items will reach the intended victims,? stressed the minister.

Mr Marmo called for more support from other institutions and other countries because the rains were still wreaking havoc in most parts of the country, especially in Kilosa, Kongwa, Ngara, Same and Mbeya.

He also ordered all the disaster combat committees in the villages, ward and districts to play their part in looking for better ways of serving the people who are in need instead of waiting for the support from the central government.

?The government will support all the victims of the floods according to its capacity but the committees, at all levels, should also play their roles,? added Mr Marmo.

Meanwhile, President Jakaya Kikwete is expected to arrive in Morogoro tomorrow to visit areas affected by floods in Kilosa District.
