The legislators of the East African Community (EAC) passed a bill here on Thursday, which would enable the five member states to promote tourism in the region as an integrated industry and a single tourist destination and share the proceeds of the industry. The EAC Tourism and Wildlife Management Bill 2008, passed by East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), seeks to establish the East African Tourism and Wildlife Commission that will coordinate the development of the sector in the region that brings together Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
According to the bill, a commission widely represented by the industry's stakeholders would be set up to coordinate national institutions in partner states and work out a model to share the lucrative profits. Safina Kwekwe Tsungu, a member of EALA representing Kenya told Xinhua in an interview shortly after the bill was passed that it also aims at harmonizing national policies, laws, regulations and standards concerning tourism and wildlife. "The bill has opened many opportunities for East Africans. Actors have opportunity to create synergies by coming together for a common good," she said. "Now partner states will not be competing with each other but working together," she added. The bill now awaits assent of the heads of state before it becomes law. The economies of the member states except for Burundi which has been ravaged by war, derive millions of U.S. dollars from the tourism industry. According to Tsungu, the countries can earn more from the sector if they operate in a coordinated manner. "With this bill, we can develop as many products because the opportunities are there, it is only that we need some coordinated action," she said.
