OVERWHELMED: Women who have just delivered and expectant mothers found sharing beds at Dar es Salaam`s Mwananyamala Municipal Hospital yesterday. The hospital`s doctor in charge, Suleiman Mutani, said the maternity wards are the most congested. (Photo: Khalfan Said)
Four expectant mothers admitted to the maternity ward at Mwananyamala Hospital share one bed, medical officer in charge Dr. Suleiman Mutani admitted yesterday.
Mutani also said there was nothing the hospital administration could do to change the situation because the problem of overcrowding in the maternity wards was beyond their capacity to deal with. But he attributed the problem to few lack of buildings by which to increase maternity wards.
Mwananyala Hospital, the designated government hospital for Kinondoni District in Dar es Salaam, has three maternity wards, Dr. Mutani said, with a total of 21 beds. The district hospital often accepts more maternity patients than what the beds can handle, which has led to persistent overcrowding in the wards.
This reporter visited one of the wards and witnessed a room packed with expectant mothers.
“We as a hospital can not tell patients to go away when they come for deliveries. We just accept them and put them in the wards because that is the space we have,” Dr. Mutani told 'The Guardian'.
A maternity patient identified only as Marian confirmed that four patients were given one bed to share at the hospital. She said patients only put their newborn babies on the beds because there was no way mothers could fit on a single bed with their children. “We put the children on the beds and find other ways to stay in the hospital,” Marian said.

My Take:
What the hell? if the people (the wananchi) think they deserve more they should demand more.. but they are the ones who would vote back the same incompetent and non-visionary leaders just like they did five years ago. The do not see a relation between their lack of facilities at a hospital like M'nyamala and the type of leadership they elected.
Dr. Mutani should be couragous to refuse some of non-emergency patients otherwise by accepting them he empowers irresponsibility and enables corrupt government officials to roam free with no sense of accountability to no one but their own already filled stomachs!
