40th anniversary

Today marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Let's take a look at how and why it came to be, its impact on our attitudes toward the environment and some of the ways we're observing the annual salute to our favorite planet. A U.S. senator founded Earth Day in 1970 to raise and reflect growing public awareness of environmental issues.

The environment wasn't making big news at the time, but a 1969 New York Times article about Earth Day noted a groundswell of activism. Recent ecological disasters in Ohio and California helped galvanize public response. The senator modeled Earth Day after a fervent movement on college campuses and chose a young graduate student at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government to organize the first national event. It was originally called something less catchy, but "Earth Day" was the name that stuck.

Since 1970, people have become more environmentally aware. Recycling numbers are on the rise, and manufacturers are responding with more recycled and recyclable packaging materials. New consumer product innovations include an affordable electric car and a compostable potato chip bag. Globally, we've seen the beginnings of a shift toward alternative energy sources as well as growing concern over climate change. Starting this summer, one U.S. city will require all food service packaging to be compostable. How "green" is your city? Calculate your carbon footprint.

This year, Santa Barbara, Calif., has expanded its huge celebration, and Washington, D.C., will host a climate rally with celebrity speakers and performers. Expect a number of events in New York and other cities across the country. For do-it-yourselfers, many ideas are circulating for kids' activities and other ways to celebrate. You can log an "act of green" with the Earth Day Network and help them toward their goal of one billion.
