And finally, Jon Snow weds at 62
(and his new bride is just 35)

With his cultivated manner and laid-back charm, broadcaster Jon Snow has long been the thinking woman’s pin-up. Yet despite his silver-haired sex appeal and romances as colourful as his neckwear — past admirers include evergreen beauty Anna Ford — the clergyman’s son has avoided matrimony on the grounds that he has a ‘pathological fear’ of claustrophobic relationships.

Thinking woman's pin-up Jon Snow recently married Precious Lunga on the Caribbean island of Mustique

Now 62, and at an age when other men are looking forward to a *comfortable retirement, the *Channel 4 News presenter has, I can reveal, married for the first time. And his bride was not human rights lawyer Madeleine Colvin, his *previous love of 35 years and the mother of his daughters Leila, 27, and Freya, 24, but *vivacious *Precious Lunga, a *Zimbabwe-born academic — who at 35 is 27 years his junior. Snow, the son of a former Bishop of Whitby, walked Precious down a beach rather than the aisle. For their wedding, I can *disclose, was on the *Caribbean island of *Mustique, the exclusive hangout of the louche and the wealthy. It was conducted at the £800-a-night Firefly Hotel, where past guests have included rocker Mick Jagger, royal Zara Phillips and actors Liz Hurley and Hugh Grant.

Bride and groom obtained a *special licence from the Ministry of Justice in nearby St Vincent, for which they qualified after *spending 24 hours on Mustique. Details of the wedding, and the Snows’ two *witnesses, have been lodged with St Vincent’s registrar office. Snow himself confirms: ‘Yes, I have got married, but I have absolutely no interest in discussing my private life. It was actually some time ago.’ In fact, Snow *married on March 26, and last month he was introducing his new wife to pals when she accompanied him to the National Portrait Gallery after Channel 4 commissioned artist John Keane to capture the esteemed newscaster in oils.

Says Keane: ‘Jon talked about her in his speech that evening.’ Unlike Snow, who failed to *complete his Liverpool University degree, Precious is a serious scholar. She is an epidemiologist with the Medical Research Council, specialising in HIV prevention in Africa, and a Yale World Fellow. She also captained the Cambridge University women’s karate team while doing a PhD in neuroscience there a decade ago. According to friends, the newlyweds are ‘passionately in love’. Lady Mary Russell, a train-bearer at the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 and a neighbour at Snow’s weekend retreat at Combe, Berkshire — he also has a flat in Hampstead — tells me: ‘I have met them both since they got married. Precious is a lovely name. She seems very nice.’

Is it or was it really love? I will ask one of my Zimbabwean friend he might know the truth
