Arsenal silence the critics in beating Manchester United
A SMALL but vocal minority of Arsenal fans had spent all week giving Ars?ne Wenger ?stick? after a couple of disappointing results. Shame on them. If you want to see ?get stuck in? football, get thee to the Potteries. The most aesthetically attractive team in the country are right back in contention for the title after winning the match of the season to date.
Manchester United contributed handsomely to the best possible advertisement for the Premier League and fashioned enough opportunities to have had at least a draw. Instead, defeat leaves them further off the fierce pace being set by Liverpool and Chelsea. For once, all the prematch hype was fully justified. In terms of technique, pace and edge-of-the-seat excitement, it doesn?t come better than this. Both managers admitted that tactics went out of the window, and the spectacle was all the better for it. Sir Alex Ferguson called it ?fantasy football . . . playground stuff?. He said: ?It was a case of ?you attack, we attack?. I don?t think I?ve seen anything quite like it anywhere in the country.? Wenger admitted that United had created just as many openings and said: ?The difference was we took our chances and they didn?t. I wouldn?t like to say there was anything else between us.?
The Gunners? success was all the more remarkable because it was achieved without their two best strikers, Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie, whose unavailability forced them to deploy in 4-5-1 formation, with the solitary front-runner, Nicklas Bendtner, supported from deep by Theo Walcott, who was not quite at his best, and Abou Diaby and Samir Nasri, who were. After last weekend?s defeat at Stoke, the concession of that 4-2 lead in the north London derby and the stalemate at home to Fenerbahce, Arsenal started nervously. United threatened to profit, making chances for Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney in the first 10 minutes.
Gradually, however, Arsenal settled, assembled their pleasing passing game and began constructing chances of their own. Before the game was a quarter of an hour old, Bendtner ought to have scored with at least one, probably two headers close in, and Bacary Sagna saw a shot blocked after Edwin van der Sar had got into one of the flaps that are becoming increasingly familiar.
Back came United. Rooney, who was off colour, scooped over from near the penalty spot with Manuel Almunia unprotected. If Rooney?s performance was sub-standard, Gary Neville?s was worse. The former England full-back probably guessed that it was going to be one of those days midway through the first half, when he deflected in a 20-yard shot from Nasri, who had his measure throughout. Criticism forgotten, the Emirates echoed to the strains of ?There?s only one Ars?ne Wenger?, but United hit back hard, with Gael Clichy close to heading Cristiano Ronaldo?s free kick into his own net and Ji-Sung Park bringing a save from Almunia. Walcott and Cesc Fabregas went close for Arsenal, and at half-time it was anybody?s game.
The second goal, which opened up daylight between the teams, arrived three minutes into the second half. Clever dexterity on the ball by Fabregas enabled Nasri to turn poor Neville on the 18-yard line before driving crisply past Van der Sar?s right hand. Game over? Hardly. United fought back like the champions they are and ought to have halved the margin almost immediately when Ronaldo wasted an inviting cross from Park by sidefooting wide from six yards. It then took a last-ditch header by Sagna to deny Rooney. Cut and thrust, nip and tuck. Bendtner, who was industry personified, set up Walcott, who miscued his shot, and when the young Dane opted to go it alone, his strike was too straight.
United had to wait until the 90th minute for the goal that was the least they deserved. It came when Ryan Giggs, on as substitute, crossed from the left and Clichy headed the ball out only as far as the edge of the penalty area. Rafael Da Silva, the 18-year-old Brazilian who was on for Neville, chested it down before scoring left-footed with the sort of shot that brooks no argument.
Six minutes of added time had Wenger turning to the fourth official in ?Are you sure?? mode, but it was Arsenal?s day. Ferguson, unusually gracious, said: ?It was a fantastic game. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say that if you?re going to get beaten, make sure it?s by a team that plays good football. Arsenal play good stuff.?
Wenger acclaimed it as ?a very important result?, adding: ?I?m not sure what the reaction would have been if we?d lost.? He saw the performance as ?a reminder of the spirit, determination and attitude we have, which cannot be questioned now. We had one accident, against Stoke, which provoked a hysterical reaction that I didn?t understand. Today we won against a great Manchester United team, who are champions of Europe, but above the result was a fantastic football game because both teams played in the right spirit.?
Amen to that.

Hapa ndipo Stamford Bridge ambapo Arsenal atawaua Chelsea oopps watakapokumbana siku ya J2.
Arsenal?s journey back into title contention simply has to make a fruitful stop at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, according to Ars?ne Wenger. The Frenchman is the epitome of optimism but, with his side 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea, he is well aware the weekend game is a rare opportunity to make up real ground.
Arsenal?s only other direct confrontation with a title favourite saw them defy pre-match predictions and pull off the performance of the season to beat Manchester United 2-1 on November 8. However they have not picked up a Premier League point since then. Sunday is not the last-chance saloon but, if they lose, Arsenal fans may need a swift, strong drink from a rose-tinted glass if they want to battle the bar-room braggadocios about their side?s title aspirations.
?We have been written off,? said Wenger quite simply at Friday?s press conference. ?You cannot say when you are 10 points behind that we are favourites to win the title but you can say as well the only way we will get back into it is to believe we can. ?That?s why we want to go into this game on Sunday by believing we can win. ?We know that direct confrontations with top teams become vital when you are in our position.
?But first of all we have to go there with extreme desire, express our strong points and not hide.
?There is no team that is not vulnerable. None in the world. And we can play and win everywhere in the world. ?We have not to consider too much who we play against. We know Chelsea are a great side with a great players. But at the end of the day you beat them if you play at your best.?
The extent of Arsenal?s injury list has been overlooked in the furore involving the change of captain this week. Wenger was without nine first-teamers for both the defeat at Manchester City and the narrow win against Dynamo Kyiv. Despite the sideshow of Cesc Fabregas taking over the armband from William Gallas, the ringmaster was lacking his star attractions when the house lights went down.
Three of those are expected to return for Stamford Bridge on Sunday - Bacary Sagna (ankle), Emmanuel Adebayor (ankle), Samir Nasri (knee). However Abou Diaby (abdominal), Kolo Toure (calf), Theo Walcott (shoulder), Emmanuel Eboue (knee), Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) Eduardo (ankle) are still out. Chelsea may be top but they have their problems aswell. They face a nervy, but eminently winnable, final game against FC Cluj in order to progress in the Champions League. And domestically they are not playing that well at home, a record of three wins, three draws and one defeat is worse than the likes of Stoke.
However one reverse in 89 Premier League games at home still makes Stamford Bridge a fortress. Especially as Arsenal have just one win in their last 12 fixtures against the Blues.
On the face of it, a draw at the leaders is never a bad result but, while managers always baulk at the idea of a ?must-win? game, Wenger also dismisses the idea of a ?must-not lose? approach.
"You never consider a game like that,? he said. ?'Must not lose? is the best way to lose it.
?I don?t know if the title is over [if we get beaten]. But ideally I do not want to be 13 points behind Chelsea so let?s make it seven on Sunday night."
This fixture was pivotal last season. Having led the table for so long then wobbled following the dramatic draw at Birmingham, Wenger?s side seemed set for a revival when Bacary Sagna put them in front just before the hour. However Didier Drogba?s late double saw Arsenal defeated and drop to third for the first time in seven months. It was where they would stay.
?Last year was special circumstances for us because we were really unlucky in the final part of the season,? said Wenger. ?Maybe this year will be the opposite where we can come back stronger after a not so good start. ?I believe in this team and we have a good opportunity to show it on Sunday. ?If you play against a direct opponent you not only have an opportunity to take three points but actually take three points away from them. If we beat a team at home and Chelsea beats a team at home we are still at the same distance away.
"So for us, with the gap we have, the biggest opportunity is to win against a direct opponent.
?Having beat Man United, I believe if we beat Chelsea we will go from strength to strength.?
Mechi nyingine kali Man City watawakaribisha Man United; Liverpool watawakaribisha watoto wa mjini West Ham chini ya Zola.

Can United be in trouble at a resurgent Tot?
RAFA BENITEZ wrote off Liverpool title chances and admitted: It ain't going to happen. The Reds are top of the Premier League going into tomorrowas trip to Hull. But boss Benitez said: For us to win the league we need Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal to mess up their season. "It is very rare that three teams all mess up. So there's no point waiting for our direct adversaries to slip up because it won't happen. They all have a lot greater financial means than us.
It is an astonishing admission from Spaniard Benitez which will not go down well in the corridors of power at Anfield. American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett do not want to hear anyone dismissing Liverpools hopes of landing the title for the first time since 1990. The Reds are one point clear of second-placed Chelsea and six ahead of Manchester United, who have a game in hand. Former Valencia chief Benitez is hoping to land a new deal.
But he added: For me, Valencia and Liverpool are similar” for them to win, the bigger clubs have to do badly. When I won La Liga with Valencia that's what happened, Real Madrid and Barcelona were in transition, so it was easier.

Wenger - It is up to us to prove them wrong
Arsene Wenger is determined to prove his team's detractors wrong, starting against Liverpool on Sunday. This week both Rio Ferdinand and Harry Redknapp have questioned Arsenal's title credentials but Wenger is not concerned. With no Manchester United game this weekend and Chelsea playing on Monday, a win against Liverpool would see the Gunners move to within five points of the Premier League summit. And, speaking ahead of Sunday's clash, the manager put the two points dropped at Middlesbrough into perspective.
Let them talk and [we will] play and show them that they are wrong, said Wenger. They can talk as long as they want. For example last weekend we played Middlesbrough away, Liverpool played at home against Hull, Chelsea played at home against West Ham but when we made a draw it was a disaster. But at the end of the day Man United played a draw at Tottenham, we played a draw at Boro, it was not as bad as you could expect it to be because we were the first to play.
We were away from home and maybe we were the ones, more than the other three teams, that deserved to win.

You're Gunner go ... Adebayor
pleads with ref Howard webb
EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR was ordered off as Arsenal saw red in a fiery encounter at the Emirates. The Togo international's controversial dismissal by referee Howard Webb overshadowed two fabulous first half goals as Liverpool moved two points clear at the top of the Premier League. Wonder strikes by Robin van Persie for the Gunners and the recalled Robbie Keane for Rafa Benitez's side kept the Anfield outfit unbeaten against top four sides this season. It was an afternoon full of drama - and the unwell Benitez didn't even make it to the game.

Van perse opener
Instead the Spaniard spent the entire 90 minutes on the mobile, ensuring his tactics were relayed to stand-in gaffer Sammy Lee. Arsenal has snatched a lead through Van Persie out of nothing after 24 minutes. Samir Nasri chipped a high ball through from just inside his own half, which the Dutchman, on the edge of the Liverpool penalty area, collected on his chest before turning two defenders and firing a right-foot shot into the net. Adebayor was then cautioned for leaving his foot in as he went for a 50/50 ball with Emiliano Insua - a challenge that would later prove costly.
If Van Persie's opener was a cracker, then Keane's equaliser almost matched it. The ball was thumped upfield from Alvaro Arbeloa and bounced over Johan Djourou into the path of the Irishman. The Republic of Ireland forward didn't take a touch - he just lashed a drive past a motionless Almunia. The home team's luck worsened when skipper Cesc Fabregas didn't appear for the second after suffering a knee injury in a tackle with countryman Xabi Alonso.
Just after the hour, Adebayor was shown a second yellow card for a hefty challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa, who fell to the ground clutching his face.
Van Persie was also cautioned for a mis-timed tackle as the Gunners began to lose their composure. But Arsenal's 10-men were resiliant and other than Daniel Agger's fiercely hit long range strike, they help on for a deserved point.

ARSENE WENGER last night sensationally accused Martin O?Neill of intimidating referee Lee Mason as Arsenal?s Premier League title hopes were shattered. Wenger claimed the Aston Villa boss deliberately put the official under pressure at half-time in the 2-2 draw before he gave the home side a penalty.
The Gunners boss raged: ?I know how it works here. At half-time the ref gets stick, in the second half a 50-50 decision goes the other way. "I waited at half-time to see what happened and I was not disappointed. "There is nothing more to explain. I had no discussion with O?Neill. You should ask him about that. The dugouts are close together.?
The two bosses clashed on the Villa Park touchline after Villa were awarded their controversial second-half spot-kick and had to be separated by backroom staff. Gareth Barry scored to put Villa back in the game. Arsenal had swept into a two-goal lead through Denilson and Abou Diaby. Wenger?s misery was completed when Zat Knight levelled in injury-time. The result left Arsenal 10 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. Wenger added: ?The penalty was the turning point. Now we have to keep our belief. We have the quality.?
Villa chief O?Neill confirmed his assistant John Robertson had spoken to the referee at half-time. He said: ?The referee did not give a foul against Gabriel Agbonlahor and was all of three yards away. I think John wanted to speak to him about that. Arsene Wenger has his own opinion
?It was much ado about nothing. We deserved a point totally. ?I thought we were brilliant in the first half but we were rocked by the opening goal. We were a goal behind and should have been four or five up.?
Conspiracy theories. What conspiracy? Even Manu got Stoke reduced to 10 men, its all about money!

HEAD MASTER ... Nemanja Vidic scores the opener
MANCHESTER UNITED blew a hole in Chelsea's title challenge and fired themselves back into the title race. Blues boss Phil Scolari admitted his side's hopes of regaining the crown would be over if they lost at Old Trafford. Not only did they lose, they were demolished by a stunning performance from in-form United. Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov scored the goals and they could have had more.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs both missed chances, while Chelsea failed to create a single shot on target. Centre-back Vidic opened the scoring in first-half stoppage-time when he was first to react to Berbatov's flick-on from Ryan Giggs's corner. Rooney sidefooted home from close range on 63 minutes after Patrice Evra's fine cross from the left evaded the Chelsea defence. Berbatov sealed an easy win three minutes from time with a near-post volley from a Ronaldo free-kick.

KAKA has given the green light to join Manchester City after the club increased their offer to a phenomenal ?243million. AC Milan last night confirmed they had received the mind-boggling bid which changes the face of world football. And we can reveal the Kaka camp gave their blessing for City to approach Milan SIX WEEKS ago when they first saw just how much was being offered. City?s bid breaks down as follows:
?108 million for AC Milan.
?108million for the superstar?s wages including taxes. Kaka will be paid a NET salary of ?13.28m a year which breaks down to ?255,000 a week take-home. ?27m in commission to brokers, middle-men and signing-on fees. The Italian giants admitted on their official TV outlet the Milan Channel they had received the bid in a dramatic bulletin. And they even invited fans to express their views over whether the club should sell Kaka, confessing Milan?s board would take a couple of days to make a decision.

RAFA BENITEZ has blasted Liverpool's owners after snubbing their contract offer.
And there are growing fears over the future of the Spanish boss at Anfield. The Reds may top the Premier League but the dispute over Benitez's stay is proving a serious disruption off the field. He has rejected the latest deal on the table after demanding more control at the club.
Benitez is unhappy that too much power is afforded to chief executive Rick Parry.

Its all Over ...........
The Blues slipped to fourth in the Premier League on Saturday after a goalless home draw with Hull.
And the club have moved swiftly to stop the rot by axing the Brazilian and placing Ray Wilkins in temporary charge. A statement on Chelsea's official website said: "Luiz Felipe Scolari has been dismissed as manager of Chelsea with immediate effect.
"The Chelsea board would like to place on record our gratitude for his time as manager. "Felipe has brought many positives to the club since he joined and we all feel a sense of sadness that our relationship has ended so soon. "Unfortunately the results and performances of the team appeared to be deteriorating at a key time in the season.
"In order to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for we felt the only option was to make the change now. "The search for a new manager has already started and we hope to have someone in place as soon as possible. "While that continues assistant coach Ray Wilkins will take charge of the team on a temporary basis."
The timing of Scolari's dismissal is likely to stun most Chelsea fans. A minority had run out of patience with the World Cup-winning coach but a new manager will be unable to add to the current squad until the transfer window reopens in the summer. His departure could also leave question marks over the future of midfielder Deco. Chelsea signed the playmaker from Barcelona for ?8million last June. He was Scolari's only major summer signing but has struggled to make any impact at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea take a gander at Guus
GUUS HIDDINK is on the verge of replacing Phil Scolari as Chelsea boss.
Scolari was sacked by Roman Abramovich yesterday after the Blues slipped to fourth in the Premier League. And Hiddink has revealed he is already holding talks with the club about taking over until the end of the season.
The Russia coach said: "I must say that this is an exceptional situation. "If it was any other club aside from Chelsea my answer would be a straight 'no'. "But Chelsea are different because I have good relations with Abramovich. "I would like to help them in this situation if I could.
?If everything is organised properly a move to London could happen. I?ll be able to give you a final answer in a few days." Hiddink's wages are already part financed by the Abramovich-backed National Academy of Football.
And Chelsea's billionaire owner is confident he can persuade the Russian FA to allow the Dutchman to coach both his country and the Londoners. Hiddink has also hinted he would be happy to combine the roles. He added: "This would be a full managerial role, a day-to-day job.
"But this would only be for the next two or three months until the end of the season. "Of course when Russia would play World Cup qualifiers I would go there to coach them. "I have already combined two jobs a couple of years ago when I was coaching Australia and PSV Eindhoven. I'm familiar with the situation and what it takes. "I want to say officially that there has been absolutely no talk of me leaving the Russian national team.
"I will stay and continue working with a team I feel very comfortable and at ease with. "When I took the Russia job it was a long-term project and I don't like to leave it unfinished." As revealed by SunSport, Hiddink's short-term appointment would leave the door open for the Blues to make a summer swoop for AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti.

SAM YOU LOSE ... Arsenal's Samir Nasri goes for goal but to no avail
THERE is a huge sign at the Emirates which states simply ?Arsene Knows?.
The popular theory is whatever the problem, the manager always has a solution.
Well, for Arsene Wenger?s sake, let?s hope he can come up with something to get Arsenal out of their current predicament. Because the last time they finished outside the Premier League?s top four, they sacked the boss.
And there are one or two disgruntled fans who are daring to wonder out loud whether it is time to ring the changes for the first time since Bruce Rioch was ditched in 1996. Wenger, in his 13th year as Arsenal boss, has staked his reputation on qualifying for the Champions League again. He said: ?For me, getting into the Champions League is not important ? it?s vital. ?I want to be there because it?s the best I can be. If I?m not there then I?m not happy. It?s as simple as that.
?You don?t play football to be average and I don?t manage to be average. Everyone at Arsenal wants to be at the top.
?I don?t question the players? desire but that?s always the first thing people doubt when you don?t get the results.? In fairness to Wenger, it was only a tiny minority of fans who were shouting ?sack the manager? after the Gunners? fourth successive 0-0 draw in the Premier League. But there were plenty more who joined in the booing at the end of their worst run of results since George Graham?s team in October 1993.
Wenger declared that he would rather have the fans jeering him than the players and said: ?I don?t know if they are losing faith but that is not my worry. It doesn?t concern me. What is more important is that I do what I believe is right and we keep going. ?We?ve been through difficult times before and this is an opportunity to show we are strong enough to come through it. The biggest problem right now is that we don?t win games that we should win.?
Quite. And the way things are going, Arsenal are on course to finish more than 20 POINTS behind the champions for the third time in four seasons. On another day and with a bit more luck, they could have beaten Fulham comfortably. Robin van Persie headed against a post and had two more efforts saved by Mark Schwarzer, who also denied Abou Diaby and Andrey Arshavin.
Yet Fulham got through the Arsenal defence with alarming ease and could easily have stolen all three points with better finishing. Fulham star Danny Murphy ran the show in the middle of the park and then declared: ?I?ve watched Arsenal a lot recently and they don?t have the cutting edge they used to have. ?They?re a young team in transition but don?t have the same strength in depth as Manchester United. If Arsenal have everyone fit they?ll match anyone. But if they lose two or three players they?re a different team.?
In fairness to Wenger, it was only a tiny minority of fans who were shouting ?sack the manager? after the Gunners? fourth successive 0-0 draw in the Premier League. But there were plenty more who joined in the booing at the end of their worst run of results since George Graham?s team in October 1993. On another day and with a bit more luck, they could have beaten Fulham comfortably.
Fulham are now knocking on the door of UEFA Cup qualification. But European football could prove a poisoned chalice for a squad with only 18 outfield players. Boss Roy Hodgson said: ?We dream of Europe but when teams get there they complain about fixture pile-ups.
?If Manchester City, Tottenham and Aston Villa, with all their resources, are struggling to cope with the UEFA Cup demands then God only knows how we would get on.?
It is a problem Wenger will almost certainly have to deal with next season. If he is still around at Arsenal.
Liverpool lost to Mid 2 - 0 ; Chelsea survived a scare and won 2 - 1 and Villa drew 2 - 2 while the boss was busy today taking a carling cup. Will it be a treble or quadruple?

BRING IT ON ... Rafa Benitez praised his players after Old Trafford romp
RAFA BENITEZ has warned Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson: We can now beat anyone. Liverpool chief Benitez threw down the title gauntlet after seeing his side romp to a famous 4-1 win at Old Trafford. Goals from Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres turned the match on its head before the break, then Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena smeared the gloss on things And with United's lead at the top of the Premier League now chopped to four points, Benitez claimed his side now have the belief to go all the way.
He said: "I have good players with a good mentality and character. ?The players had confidence before the game and then worked very hard to play well against a very good team. We knew we had to win, and it was very difficult after conceding a goal, but still we went forward and pushed and tried and believed. ?It was a great game. I think we have played better, but not against teams at the level of United so I am really pleased for the players.
?The league is very difficult but at least we now have more options and we are more confident that we can beat anyone and stay closer. ?The main thing today was to get three points so I am very proud and pleased.? For Ferguson, the humiliating scoreline flattered the visitors and he was still pleased with his players. He said: "It?s a hard one to take, particularly because I thought we were the better team. ?We have to accept it was a bad day in terms of the goals we lost, but I couldn?t fault the display that much.?
THE race for the Premier League title is back on after Rafa Benitez outsmarted Alex Ferguson on his own patch. Bani has outsmarted Fergi back to back win at the Premier.

ANDREY ARSHAVIN scored his first goal for Arsenal as they piled the pressure on Aston Villa in the race for fourth place. Arsene Wenger's men moved above Villa, for 24 hours at least, thanks to an impressive display against relegation-haunted Blackburn.
Arshavin appeared to have broken the deadlock for the Gunners when he slid in for Theo Walcott's early cross. The Russian clearly thought he had got the final touch but it was ruled that Andre Ooijer had diverted the ball past Paul Robinson. Yet if Arshavin was disappointed to see the strike chalked off, he didn't certainly didn't show it with the manner in which he opened his account for the hosts.
His silky skills were too much for Danny Simpson to contend with and Arshavin skinned the defender before lashing home after 65 minutes to raise the roof at the Emirates. The Gunners continued to pour forward and it was no surprise when the third goal hit the net two minutes from time. Emmanuel Eboue had been introduced just minutes earlier in place of Samir Nasri and it was the much-criticised utility man who tapped home the rebound after Robinson denied Arshavin. Eboue rounded off an unlikely two-goal cameo appearance by converting from the spot in injury-time when Carlos Vela was sent crashing in the box.

JERMAINE MAN .... Jenas celebrates his early opener
JERMAINE JENAS and Darren Bent gave a huge boost to arch-rivals Arsenal by shooting down Aston Villa on their own patch. News of a Tottenham win would normally be met with boos from their north-London foes. But with Arsene Wenger?s side battling Villa for fourth spot in the table, this was one both sets of fans can enjoy. Things couldn?t have started better for Spurs, with Jenas nodding home after Brad Freidel had failed to deal with Aaron Lennon?s cross from the right.
And Bent then grabbed the crucial second early in the second half, poking home Robbie Keane?s goal-bound effort. John Carew did head a response with six minutes to go, but the equaliser wasn't forthcoming. The defeat means Martin O?Neill?s men now sit level on points with Arsenal, with an inferior goal-difference putting them in fifth position. But despite the setback, and the fact Liverpool and Manchester United are next, the Northern Irishman remains confident his men can sneak in ahead of Arsenal.
He said: "This was a disappointing result because it was a game we felt we could win but I still feel it is possible to reach our objectives. ?In November we lost two games in six days and then went on a 13-match unbeaten run. ?We probably have to get something from the next two games which will be pretty difficult but I believe it is possible that we can still fight back and the players feel that. ?There are still nine games to go, plenty of points to play for.? Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp hailed the performance of centre back pairing Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King after the visitors gained their fourth away victory of the season.
He said: ?Ledley has come back into the side and, with Jonathan, forms one of the best pairings in the country. ?You can talk about Ferdinand and Vidic but these two are also up there. They are fantastic central defenders. ?They have got bags of pace, bags of ability and play a key part for us.?

MICHAEL ESSIEN'S stunner helped Chelsea keep up the pressure on Manchester United. The Red Devils were hammered 4-1 by Liverpool yesterday.
And Guus Hiddink's side lept above the Reds into second and closed the gap on United to four points by cruising past Manchester City today. Essien's 18th-minute strike was the difference, although City's toothless attack failed to produce a single shot on target all match.
Blues boss Guus Hiddink hailed the Ghana midfielder, who has spent a long spell on the sidelines. The Russian said: "Its important to have him back after months out, to be in the squad and making full games because that makes him stronger. "We have seen it in some duels that he is using his strength and winning those duels. "That is why it is good to play him for 90 minutes and if he can score a goal that is even better, as he has in the last two games.
"He will grow physically because you can work as hard as you want and demand it in training but the games bring this passion which we need and he needs." Essien was pleased to have finally returned to Premier League action.

Dan The man ?.. danny Murphy celebrates
ALEX FERGUSON was left red faced as Fulham stunned his nine-men Manchester United. Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney both got their marching orders as United imploaded at Craven Cottage. Danny Murphy slotted home a spot-kick after Scholes was dismissed for handling in the area. Zoltan Gera's strike sealed the victory for the Cottagers before Rooney saw red late on. Dimitar Berbatov should have headed United in front from Cristiano Ronaldo's fifth-minute cross.
And he was made to pay after Scholes was dismissed for a blatent handball. Murphy stepped up and sent Edwin Van der Sar the wrong way. The Cottagers dominated with the extra man advantage and Bobby Zamora could have doubled the lead but he was denied by Van der Sar. The ex-West Ham striker had another shot blocked by Patrice Evra before Simon Davies and Dickson Etuhu fluffed chances.
Ferguson must have given his side the hair-dryer treatment at the break as Park Ji-Sung and Ronaldo went close. Davies and Zamora showed Fulham were still a threat. But United responded with Darren Fletcher's shot and a Ronaldo header which was saved on the line. Rooney, a half-time sub, tested keeper Mark Schwarzer after he had stopped Park's effort. Ferguson hauled off John O'Shea for Carlos Tevez and the Argie ace missed two golden opportunities.
As United pressed, they were hit with a hammer blow by supersub Zoltan Gera who smashed home a scissor-kick to make the win safe. And Rooney recklessly saw red for his second booking when threw the ball at referee Phil Dowd.

ARSENAL piled the misery on relegation-haunted Newcastle with a convincing win at St James' Park. The Gunners lacked a killer touch during a frustrating first half but were grateful to go into the break on level terms after giving away a penalty. Obafemi Martins stepped up to the spot only to see his poor effort easily saved by Manuel Almunia with 25 minutes on the clock.
Arsene Wenger's men came out fired up for the second half and Nicklas Bendtner broke the deadlock after 57 minutes. Martins made amends for his penalty miss just 60 seconds later to pull Newcastle level. But the Toon faithful were quickly silenced when Abou Diaby restored the lead after 64 minutes. And Samir Nasri wrapped up the points for the Gunners just three minutes later ? pushing Newcastle back into the bottom three on goal difference.

YOU wait an age for one shocking disintegration of poise and invulnerability and suddenly two come along at once. Eight days ago Manchester United were skipping through the forest with seemingly nothing to stop them popping trophies in their basket. Now they are as edgy as Little Red Riding Hoods who have just seen the Big Bad Wolf. Sir Alex Ferguson scoffed that he?d need to ?read more Freud? in order to fathom Rafael Benitez, but if his nemesis can fashion a win over Aston Villa this afternoon, the joke will be on Ferguson. Liverpool would move to within a point of United with a chance, thanks to the fixture list, to regain leadership of the Premier League before United play again. It is Ferguson and his players who seem in need of psychoanalysis, if only to understand what inner collapse has caused such a sudden loss of authority.
Ferguson did his best to preserve any remaining veneer of calm as the teams left the pitch. He ordered Carlos Tevez, then Edwin Van der Sar to stop harranguing Phil Dowd, the referee, but nobody was fooled. Apoplexy overcame Ferguson in his post-match interview. After complaining about the sending-offs of both Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes (questioning the latter, for blatant handball on the goalline seemed even more one-eyed than claiming United were ?the better team? in their 4-1 defeat by Liverpool last week) exasperation caused Ferguson to tail off. ?Ach . . . I mean . . . oh,? he said, ?what can you say about that??
Fulham were magnificent, feisty, resolute, intelligent, controlled by United?s old bugbear Danny Murphy in the first period and kept intact by Mark Schwarzer?s heroic goalkeeping in the second. They were rocking only briefly, when United shelled Schwarzer?s goal for 10 minutes either side of the hour mark but that was it. Ferguson?s assertion following the Liverpool defeat that ?we will respond? was not borne out and for once the manager is grateful for an international break. He should have been thanking Dowd. Cristiano Ronaldo could easily have earned the same penalty as Rooney and Scholes, who will miss United?s next fixture, versus Aston Villa, for a foot-off-the-ground lunge on Murphy for which he was yellow carded but might have seen red, and a prissy show of dissent minutes later, for which the referee merely warned him.
Dowd was more punitive towards Rooney. With a minute left the forward hurled the ball away when Dowd ordered a free kick to be retaken. He had already been cautioned for a cynical shirt-pull on Olivier Dacourt and was ordered to leave the field after being booked again. On his way off, Rooney landed a meaty punch upon the corner flag but it was United who had received the knockout blow. Moments earlier Zoltan Gera had settled matters by scoring with a bicycle kick, teeing himself up cleverly after interplay with Andy Johnson.
Fulham?s early lead arrived when Brede Hangeland flicked on at a corner, Van der Sar saved Bobby Zamora?s header and Scholes palmed the ball away when Zamora followed up with another headed effort. Murphy stroked the penalty past Van der Sar and Ferguson?s gamble of recalling Scholes at Michael Carrick?s expense had failed. Dimitar Berbatov and Ronaldo, chosen as the front-line ahead of Rooney and Carlos Tevez, were indolent and indulgent respectively. Rooney, on at striker after replacing Berbatov at half-time, was the inspiration behind United?s comeback and it stalled the moment Ferguson brought on Tevez and moved Rooney to the right. Fulham should have added to their first goal earlier but Clint Dempsey and Zamora missed chances and there were too many long-range shots.
Giggs released Ronaldo with a gorgeous pass and Schwarzer saved with his body when Park Ji-Sung attempted to convert the cross. Rooney went for goal with the rebound and Schwarzer saved again. When Murphy made it 1-0 the cameras panned to the bench and you could see the gum turning round in Ferguson?s mouth at the speed of clothes in a spin cycle. At 2-0 he leaned back open mouthed. The chewing, and United?s world, had stopped.

RAFA BENITEZ sat back and enjoyed the view as his side blitzed Aston Villa to pile the pressure on Manchester United. Goals from Dirk Kuyt and Albert Riera, followed by a Steven Gerrard spot-kick, left Liverpool home and dry before the interval. But Gerrard quickly added to the tally in the second period as United's lead at the top of the league was cut to just a point.
And the England ace completed his hat-trick with a second penalty of the afternoon after Brad Friedel was red-carded for bringing down Fernando Torres. Liverpool made the perfect start when Kuyt smashed them ahead after just eight minutes. Gerrard's free-kick was headed against the bar by Xabi Alonso but the Dutchman was on hand to drill home the rebound.
Villa tried to hit back immediately with a swift break. Ashley Young fired in a decent cross but the ball flew off the arriving Gareth Barry's knee and away to safety.

Dirk Kuyt opens the scoring
Young continued to cause Liverpool problems without finding a telling delivery for strike duo John Carew and Emile Heskey. And it was the hosts who came closest to scoring again in the 16th minute when Gerrard narrowly missed at the far post after latching on to a deflected cross.
Villa nearly grabbed an equaliser five minutes later and again it was Young who created the opportunity. The England international's delivery was met by Carew but the striker's clever left-footed flick was turned away by Pepe Reina.
Liverpool cleared their lines from the resulting corner and Gerrard became the first player to go in the ref's notebook just seconds later for a lunge at Curtis Davies. The physical presence of Villa's front two became a more dominant factor as the half wore on. Nigel Reo-Coker swung a long ball into the box with 25 minutes on the clock and Reina had to be at his best to turn away Carew's goalbound header. The game continued to swing from end to end before Reina decided to take the direct approach and create Liverpool's second of the afternoon. He launched a long kick into the Villa box and Riera raced through to smash the ball past Friedel 12 minutes before the break. The visitors should have fallen further behind when Friedel's stray pass went straight to the feet of Alvaro Arbeloa.
But the defender tried to cut the ball back to Torres instead of shooting and the danger was quickly cleared. Villa, however, contributed to their own downfall once again in the 39th minute when Reo-Coker sent Riera crashing in the box. Gerrard stepped up to net the resulting spot-kick, lifting the roof at Anfield in the process. With nothing to lose in the second half, Villa came out looking to salvage some pride. But the red juggernaut quickly battered them into submission with Gerrard's expertly placed free-kick making it 4-0 with 50 minutes played.
Liverpool continued to pour forward after the goal and Alonso wasted a golden chance when he found himself in acres of space.
The unmarked Spaniard picked up Kuyt's pass in the box but could only drag his shot disappointingly wide. Villa's day went from bad to worse when Friedel sent Torres crashing.
The American keeper did his best to get out of the striker's way but could have no complaint when the referee pointed to the spot. And with the visitors down to 10 men, Gerrard clamly sent substitute stopper Brad Guzan the wrong way to net his third goal.

HEATED ... Wayne Rooney exchanged words with referee Phil Dowd after his red
WAYNE ROONEY will not face any further disciplinary action following his red card at Fulham on Saturday. The Manchester United striker was sent off for two bookable offences during the 2-0 defeat and exchanged words with referee Phil Dowd after being shown red. And while the official has confirmed Rooney did not swear at him, the FA will write to the 23-year-old with a formal warning about further conduct after he punched the corner flag. An FA spokesman said: ?We have clarified with Phil Dowd that there was no abuse from the player after he was dismissed.
?In relation to the incident when he punched the corner flag, the referee did not see that and we have written to Wayne Rooney reminding him of his responsibilities.? Rooney will only be suspended for one game, the Premier League visit of Aston Villa to Old Trafford on April 5.

FEDERICO MACHEDA marked his first-team debut by firing Manchester United back to the top of the Premier League. The Italian youngster came off the bench to curl in a dramatic injury-time winner to take the champions a point clear of Liverpool with a game in hand. Alex Ferguson?s men were facing a third straight defeat after John Carew and Gabby Agbonlahor had overturned Cristiano Ronaldo's opener. But 10 minutes to go, Ronaldo slotted home from the edge of the box to set up a frantic finale before 17-year-old rookie Macheda stroked the ball home to send Old Trafford into raptures.

Wenger is backing bitter rival Alex Ferguson to hold off the Anfield challenge ? but he believes his Gunners will still have a major say in the title race. Arsenal are six points behind third-placed Chelsea. But Wenger said: ?We are on a very strong run at the moment and we want to keep that going, starting at Wigan this weekend. ?We have to play Chelsea, Liverpool and United in the league, so we will have a massive influence on the title race, even if we are too far behind to win it now. ?Our first target is to get even further away from Aston Villa.
?But then we want to get as close as possible to Chelsea and Liverpool. ?Third place is very important this time because it means automatic qualification for the Champions League next season. ?If you finish fourth you go into the qualifying round and this time it will be an open draw, which means you can get anyone. Third place can make a massive difference. ?The title race is exactly how everyone wants it because, with seven games to go, nobody knows who is going to be champions.

ALEX FERGUSON has blamed the Wembley pitch for his decision to play a weakened side against Everton. Arsenal boss Wenger described the surface as a "joke" after his side lost 2-1 to Chelsea on Saturday. And Ferguson revealed he had pulled some of his stars out of yesterday's FA Cup semi-final because of the poor turf.
The Manchester United manager said: "When I saw the pitch, what I didn't want was to go into extra-time with my strongest squad. "It looked spongy and dead and difficult to move the ball quickly around it. "They've got all these lights around the perimeter to help the growth and the standard of the soil. But it looks dead to me. "So we had to go with the bold decision of playing the younger ones. "After all, our club is built on giving young players opportunities and they didn't disappoint. "Once we made our mind up, I was quite enthusiastic about it.
"It was the right thing to do. It was good for them."
Alex is relying on Arsenal to upset Liverpool tomorrow in the premier League at Anfield. Arsenal will be without Adebayo and Robin Van Persie after suffering minor knocks ... .... Wondering why Arsenal couldn't move at Wembley?! only Chelsea could manage as their stadia is more or less like Wembley.

ANDREY ARSHAVIN scored an incredible FOUR goals - but Liverpool somehow stole a point at Anfield. Arsenal's Russian star shone in a topsy-turvy match with the Reds coming back from the brink. Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun both grabbed two goals for Liverpool.
Midfielder Benayoun netted in the THIRD minute of added time to fire his side level on points with Manchester United at the top of the Premier League. Liverpool had dominated the first half but were denied by some spectacular saves by Arsenal keeper Lukasz Fabianski. Arshavin fired the Gunners ahead in the 36th minute after Javier Mascherano's error.
The Argie ace's sloppy pass led to Cesc Fabregas finding Arshavin, who blasted in off the bar.
But the Reds came out fighting after the break with Torres' header levelling things up. Benayoun struck soon after to give Rafa Benitez's side the lead, although he took a wack on the head in the process. The Israeli was congratulated as he lay on the floor in agony after being kicked in the face by Bacary Sagna. But Arshavin blew away Liverpool with a stunning three-minute double to hand the advantage back to the Gunners.
That was until Torres banged in his second of the night on 72 minutes. Albert Riera crossed from the left and the striker controlled superbly before firing home. Nicklas Bendtner could have stolen a fourth for Arsenal when he beat Pepe Reina but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Theo Walcott came off the bench and set up Arshavin for the fourth with just seconds left of normal time. And in added time Benayoun grabbed the equaliser before Fabregas was denied the winner by a late offside flag.

Kuyt: Now we need a miracle
http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00787/Liverpool_787276a.jpg
LIVERPOOL striker Dirk Kuyt claims the club need a miracle to win the Premier League ? but they will still fight to the bitter end. The Dutchman accepts the thrilling 4-4 draw against Arsenal has handed a clear advantage to Manchester United in the title race. That draw, salvaged through a late equaliser from Yossi Benayoun, put Rafa Benitez's men top of the table on goal difference.
But United now have two games in hand on their bitter rivals ? leaving Kuyt and Co praying for upsets. He said: "It is harder after last night because we knew before the game that we needed to win to keep the pressure on. ?But at least we got a draw and didn?t lose. We have to keep fighting until the very end. ?We have to hope for a miracle now as it has become more difficult than it already was. "But you have seen a team that has not given up and we will never give up.
"So let?s hope that a miracle can happen.?

TOP OFF THE TABLE ... Cristiano Ronaldo is mobbed after his second
OLD TRAFFORD sung ?are you watching Liverpool?? as a five-goal comeback by Manchester United all-but sealed the Premier League title. Darren Bent and Luka Modric had fired Tottenham to a 2-0 lead at the break, giving hope to Rafa Benitez? title chasers hope.
But the game swung on 57 minutes, when Heurelho Gomes was adjudged to have brought down Michael Carrick by referee Howard Webb.
The decision was a shocker, but Cristiano Ronaldo didn?t care, slotting home from the spot to start the fightback.

Redknapp furious at Webb decision
Referee had a bad day - Redknapp
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp called for match officials to use technology after a controversial penalty award in their 5-2 defeat by Manchester United. He was furious when referee Howard Webb gave United a penalty, ruling Heurelho Gomes had fouled Michael Carrick. "The players can't believe it," said Redknapp. "It changed the game.
"The referee made a terrible mistake. You should have technology. The fourth official should be watching the TV monitor and talking to the referee." Spurs dominated the opening period with goals from Darren Bent and Luka Modric before conceding five second-half goals to lose after the penalty award by Webb, who will referee the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Everton.
The 37-year-old is regarded as one of England's best officials (What a joke!) and took charge of two group games at Euro 2008. (I don't think we will see him again in Europe) Title is ours to lose now - Rooney So far this season he has issued five red cards, including dismissals for Manchester United pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Nemanja Vidic, in 39 games. (So it was pay back time)Ronaldo converted the penalty to spark the deluge of goals with the Portuguese forward also scoring a header, with Rooney weighing in with a brace, while Dimitar Berbatov got on the scoresheet to lift the Old Trafford side to the top of the table, three points ahead of Liverpool.
Convinced Gomes had got a hand to the ball before contact was made with Carrick, Redknapp added: "United were not going to win unless something like that happened. "The referee has not done it on purpose, it is just a bad decision but it was the turning point." (Are you kidding me?) United were denied a penalty by Mike Riley in last week's FA Cup semi-final defeat to Everton when Danny Welbeck appeared to be felled by Phil Jagielka, a decision that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was quick to highlight in discussing Webb's decision. "We were a bit fortunate but football is a funny game," said Ferguson. First goal was key - Phelan
"You get terrible decisions. We got one last week. You have to deal with them and get on with it."
Former Tottenham player Berbatov was impressive throughout, prompting his manager to describe his performance as "fantastic". "I don't think he gave the ball away once," added Ferguson. "He was our best player in the first-half and in the second he produced some wonderful moments. "He does things that are world class."
Thats MANURE for you! Phew .......

CESC FABREGAS netted both goals as Arsenal piled the pressure on relegation-haunted Middlesbrough. Skipper Fabregas scored in each half to move the Gunners to within six points of third-placed Chelsea.
The Spaniard completed a flowing move with a sliding right-foot effort after 26 minutes before rounding Brad Jones to net the second with 67 minutes on the clock. Fabregas said: "I had completely lost the feeling of scoring a goal. To score two in a game is always special but the feeling was amazing. "We played some good stuff, we moved the ball really quick and every player was good so we are happy with that." With a vital Champions League tie against Manchester United just 72 hours away, boss Arsene Wenger would have been forgiven for resting a couple of his key men.
The result dealt a major blow to Boro's hopes of survival, as Gareth Southgate's side remained rooted in 18th, three points adrift of safety with just four games to play. Both sides face Manchester United next, but if Southgate was hoping Arsenal would be distracted by Wednesday's Champions League semi-final against the holders, he was sadly mistaken.
Arsene Wenger opted to field a strong side that was missing just Emmanuel Adebayor and Bacary Sagna - who returned to the bench from injury and illness respectively - of those expected to start at Old Trafford.
And at times, some of Arsenal's play was exceptional, leaving Boro to chase shadows and feed on scraps for much of the game. Led by the classy Andrei Arshavin, who was at the centre of most of their attacking play, Arsenal entirely bossed the opening period.
Wenger said: "We played against a good Middlesbrough side and it was an entertaining game.

Cheerio ... .... .... Ron could have played his
last game for United at Old Trafford.
CRISTIANO RONALDO plans to quit Manchester United this summer for a ?70million move to Real Madrid. And in a double whammy for United, Manchester City are ready to battle Liverpool to capture Carlos Tevez. Ronaldo has told friends and team-mates to forget stories he is staying at Old Trafford. After a hat-trick of titles and two Champions League finals, he feels he has achieved what he wanted. Now he is keen to revive Real's fortunes in a record-breaking switch to the Bernabeu.
A United source said: "He looks to have made up his mind again. He is not saying it publicly with such a big game coming up next week in the Champions League final. "But in his mind that will be his last. The fact Real trailed Barcelona in La Liga this season only makes the challenge more exciting for him." Ronaldo made his feelings clear to those close to him as recently as last Saturday, when the champagne was still flowing after United's title-clinching home draw with Arsenal. SunSport understands a number of senior players have been trying to talk round the Portuguese wizard but he is having none of it.
And manager Alex Ferguson, who won the same fight last summer, will now find it very difficult to keep the World Player of the Year. A ?30m Tevez move across Manchester to join old enemies City would horrify United fans but suit the unsettled Argentinian striker. Though there will be no European football at Eastlands next season, City can offer him the regular Premier League spot he craves.

City D-Day for Eto'o
MANCHESTER CITY have given Barcelona a weekend deadline over Samuel Eto'o. City thought they had a deal in place when the Spanish giants accepted a ?25million offer for the Cameroon hitman. Eto'o agreed wages of ?200,000 a week - after tax - but knows Barca are keen to cash in now with just one season left on his contract.
So he is holding out for half the fee Barca receive, arguing they could lose him for nothing as a free agent next year. Now City have decided enough is enough and want a definite answer from the Spaniards in 48 hours. City head to South Africa for their pre-season tour late next week and would like Eto'o by then. Barcelona claim the player is ducking their attempts to talk.
President Juan Laporta said: "I've called him but he hasn't picked up the phone."
Money isn't everything! - Eto.

Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri will be out for up to three months after fracturing his right fibula in pre-season training. The injury was sustained at a training camp in Austria. The 22-year-old France international joined from Marseille in 2008 and made 44 first-team appearances in his first campaign in English football.
He scored seven times, the first goal coming seven minutes into his debut against West Brom. The Frenchman's injury will disrupt Arsene Wenger's new season plans, although midfielder Tomas Rosicky has returned to fitness.
The 28-year-old Czech has missed the past 18 months with a combination of knee and hamstring injuries.

Fergie: City are arrogant
SIR ALEX FERGUSON has branded Manchester City "arrogant" over their controversial poster campaign. No sooner had City completed their ?25million capture of Carlos Tevez following the South American's successful two-year stint at Old Trafford than a giant poster was erected at the bottom of Deansgate, one of Manchester's busiest shopping areas, declaring: "Carlos Tevez, welcome to Manchester."
The poster emphasises the fact City are based in the city of Manchester, whereas United are in the neighbouring borough of Trafford, something Blues fans have pointed out regularly down the years as they laid claim to the title of Manchester's only club. Ferguson said: "It is like one of those war adverts - Your Country Needs You. "Arrogance comes in lots of different ways. I think it is daft. "They were having a go at Manchester United. They have had a problem ever since I joined United in 1986. "You have to understand, when they get their moment to grasp for and to seize for, they are going to take it."
