ADMISSIONS OPEN FOR M.ED. PROGRAMME YEAR 2009
The Aga Khan University-Institute for Educational Development, Eastern Africa (AKU-IED, EA) is part of the University?s Tanzania Institute of Higher Education (AKU-TIHE). AKU-TIHE holds a Certificate of Registration issued by the Tanzania Commission for Universities. Whilst AKU-IED, EA is based in Dar es Salaam, it has an international focus and offers programmes for and in countries in East Africa. It aims to improve the quality of education in East Africa by creating a scholarly centre of excellence in teacher education and professional development through its research and its Master of Education and Certificate in Education programmes.
Applications for admission to the next Master of Education cohort are invited. Classes for the two-year, full-time programme will commence in November 2009. Candidates can apply through one of the following routes:
Aga Khan University and the Government of the Republic of Tanzania Scholarships ? 9 positions
Applicants must be employees of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training deployed as teachers or educators in the areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies/Geography/History or should be in Educational Leadership positions. Candidates must be willing to take up these partial scholarships co-funded by the Aga Khan University and the Government of the Republic of Tanzania. Successful candidates will be required to make a minimal financial contribution towards their costs of studying and living in Dar es Salaam. Applications must be sent through the employer: the Director, Secondary Education; or Director, Teacher Education; or Director, Primary Education.
Aga Khan University scholarships ? 2 positions
AKU-IED, EA is seeking applications from teachers and teacher educators in the areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies/Geography/History who are interested in undertaking a fully-supported, two-year, full-time, Master of Education (MEd) programme at AKU-IED, EA. Only candidates who meet merit criteria for admission to the programme will be considered for support. Successful candidates will be required to sign a three-year bond agreement to work with AKU-IED, EA on completion of the programme. They will also be required to make a minimal financial contribution towards their costs of studying and living in Dar es Salaam. Appointment to AKU-IED, EA however, is dependant on performance during the MEd as well as meeting of minimum criteria for appointment to faculty position.
Privately Sponsored Student ? 2 positions
Applicants must be professional teachers and must be currently working in the Education sector. Applicants who would like to further their studies in areas of English, Mathematics, Social Studies/Geography/History or Educational Leadership and who are interested in taking a two-year, full-time, Master of Education (MEd) programme at AKU-IED, EA should apply. Successful candidates will be required to pay tuition and accommodation fees. Applicants do not need to apply through the employer.

Entry requirements
Candidates must have:
? At least a Bachelor?s degree, Second Class Upper Division (GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0) with a professional qualification in education;
? Minimum teaching experience of two years accumulated after obtaining bachelor?s degree;
? In the case of TSC-employed teachers applying for Aga Khan University and Government of Kenya co-sponsorship, candidate must have served for at least six years as a teacher;
? Proficiency in English Language.
All short-listed candidates will go through an interview, a logical reasoning and English Language proficiency tests.
