The World Bank (WB) has announced a stimulus package of 220 million U.S. dollars for Tanzania to better absorb the impact of the ongoing global financial crisis and economic downturn.
The announcement was made by WB country representative John Mackintire when he met with Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete on Wednesday.
A statement from the State House quoted the WB official as telling the Tanzanian president that the WB would not only support Tanzania through budget support but also help the African country to mitigate the ongoing economic turbulence under the Bank Support Stimulus Package initiative.
Tanzania is among five African countries that have received the WB stimulus package on condition that they perform well in efforts to boost their economies, according to the same official.
The bank, along with two other international institutions and 11 countries, also contributes to the basket of General Budget Support for the government of Tanzania.
