ON A HIGH ... John Terry and Frank Lampard lift the Community Shield at Wembley
CARLO ANCELOTTI grabbed his first piece of English silverware yesterday - and now the nation is hoping the season will end with another Italian leading the country to glory.
The season kicked off with Ancelotti's Chelsea proving they can win a penalty shootout - even against Manchester United. And on Wednesday Fabio Capello begins serious preparations for England's assault on the World Cup with a friendly against Holland. What odds an Italian double with both former AC Milan managers writing their names large in the history of the English game? Ancelotti could not have got a better start to his reign as Blues boss at Wembley with a spot-kick victory over the Premier League kings. Wayne Rooney's injury-time equaliser forced the Community Shield to penalties but Chelsea held their nerve having failed to win a shootout for 11 years. In fact, four Chelsea managers have lost the club's last six spot-kick crunchers - including the 2008 Champions League Final against United in Moscow - so Ancelotti did not have history on his side.
When you are Italian, however, penalties are as much a part of the culture as pizza and Pavarotti. United boss Alex Ferguson will remember Ancelotti's Milan side winning a shootout at Old Trafford to beat Juventus in the 2003 Champions League final. Ancelotti has had his players practising from 12 yards in training over the past two weeks and it clearly paid off. Ben Foster, the hero for United in their Carling Cup shootout victory against Spurs last season, looked supremely confident as he stood to face Frank Lampard. With Capello watching from the Royal Box, Foster clearly fancied a repeat of that afternoon but was soon made to look the court jester.
First Lamps, then Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba all beat him easily to the keeper's right. Petr Cech fared much better, saving with his feet from Ryan Giggs before Patrice Evra completed his clown-like performance with a comedy kick which rolled into the keeper's arms. Salomon Kalou struck the winning kick and Ancelotti raised his arms to salute his first silverware in his new job. Not that winning the shield, which marks the opening of the season, will be enough to see him succeed where two of his last three predecessors failed. Ancelotti is no fool and knows only lifting the Premier League title and/or the Champions League this season will see him stay for a second.
This win though, was more significant for Chelsea than just breaking their penalty hoodoo. For five weeks the new boss has been preaching on his preferred diamond formation but for 30 minutes against United, it looked less than polished. Fergie played four across the middle with Evra and John O'Shea overlapping from full-back. And in a torrid period for Chelsea, they were almost swept away as tide after tide of red shirts broke their defensive barrier. Wayne Rooney, Darren Fletcher and even the limp Dimitar Berbatov peppered Cech's goal. But it was Portuguese winger Nani who broke the deadlock after just 10 minutes. He scooped up a perfect crossfield pass from Fletcher before selling Branislav Ivanovic a clever dummy.
Michael Essien was slow to close the space and Nani bent a shot which flew between Cech and John Terry. Ancelotti clenched his fists in frustration. Fergie just sat back in his seat and smiled. And if United's possession had been converted into goals in the first 45 minutes then this contest would have been over at half time. Chelsea, though, have yet to lose under their new Italian coach and have shown a stubborn tenacity on the pitch matched by Ancelotti's shrewd tactical brain. He removed the hapless Ivanovic and asked Lampard to drop deeper and take responsibility on the ball. The England star set up Ricardo Carvalho's equaliser after 52 minutes which Foster placed on his head with an unconvincing clearance.
Lamps then fired the Blues ahead with 19 minutes left after a great set-up from Drogba. Showing classic Italian caution, Ancelotti pulled Drogba and Lampard back to help defend the flanks in the closing minutes. With nine men behind the ball and only Kalou up front, Chelsea had the perfect system to foil Fergie's men. But it was a case of almost but not quite as Giggs nudged a perfect ball past Jose Bosingwa for Rooney to run on and beat Cech with just a minute of added time left. In recent years, Chelsea hearts have burst and heads dropped at the prospect of winning a shootout. That does not appear the case under Ancelotti. He selected his list of penalty takers and gave them specific instructions on what to do.
Ferguson was already stewing over Ballack's body check on Evra in the build-up to Chelsea's second goal. So the comedy of errors in the shootout must have left him fuming at the start of a season where United are chasing an record fourth consecutive League title. The omens for Ancelotti are much better. Jose Mourinho was the last Chelsea boss to win the Community Shield which he followed with a second Premier League win. If Ancelotti's side can sustain this level of performance, it could yet be a vintage year for England's Italians.

Didier celebrates his winner
DIDIER DROGBA'S double spared Chelsea's blushes against gutsy Hull.
The Ivory Coast striker scored a stoppage time winner to shatter the Tigers' hearts. But the Blues were made to work for their opening day victory. Debutant Stephen Hunt put the visitors ahead in the 27th minute after George Boateng's deflected effort fell invitingly for him. The midfielder tucked the ball home into an empty net to stun the Stamford Bridge faithful. Carlo Ancelotti's side had been upset at the free-kick award by referee Alan Riley when he adjudged that Jose Bosingwa had tugged the shirt of Hunt.
And it got worse for the Blues when Andy Dawson sent the free-kick towards the Chelsea penalty area. It was only half-cleared to Boateng on the edge of the box and his shot cannoned off both Ashley Cole and John Obi Mikel before falling to Hunt to apply an easy finish. It marked a dream debut for the Irishman, who had been booed all afternoon by the Chelsea fans. The home supporters still have not forgiven the ex-Reading player for the challenge which left Petr Cech with a fractured skull and still wearing protective headgear as a result. Chelsea responded immediately but a 25-yard drive by Drogba was well held by Boaz Myhill. But the Blues drew level ten minutes later thanks to a superb free-kick strike from the former Marseille ace.
Seyi Olofinjana was penalised by Wiley for holding off Mikel some 25 yards out and Drogba punished them severely when he sent a dipping shot over the defensive wall and into the corner. Myhill then had to dive low to his left to prevent Michael Essien from giving Chelsea the lead five minutes before the interval. The home side replaced Mikel with Germany captain Michael Ballack at half-time. He moved to the right of the diamond formation with Essien switching to the holding role. Ancelotti's side should have gone in front within seconds of the re-start. Drogba set-up partner Nicolas Anelka perfectly but the France international failed to beat Myhill from six-yards. Lampard, enjoying his new forward role at the head of the diamond, then hit the side-netting with a rasping 20 yard drive from the edge of the penalty area.
In the 56th minute Myhill twice denied Drogba with stunning saves as the frontman looked for his second of the game. Chelsea had now taken full control of the contest and Malouda was inches away from giving them the lead when his curling effort just fell the wrong side of the post. But their approach play was far too intricate and Hull snuffed out their repeated advances with ease. In the 68th minute Hull replaced Hunt with new signing Ghilas to a chorus of boos from the Chelsea fans and the Blues substituted Malouda for Deco. The game looked to be heading for a draw until Drogba received the ball on the edge of the area in the 91st minute. He cut towards the byline and his cross-shot evaded Myhill to hand boss Ancelotti a winning start to Chelsea's Premier League campaign.

Arsenal produce a scintillating opening-day display to hammer a woefully out-of-sorts Everton 6-1.
ARSENE WENGER'S Gunners stuck two fingers up to their critics with a six-goal demolition of Everton. Arsenal boss Wenger has taken stick for offloading Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure, while restricting his summer spending to only Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen. Many experts believe the Londoners will be the club to lose their spot in the Big Four. But there may have to be a rethink in some quarters after a devastating display tore apart David Moyes' supposedly solid side. New boy Thomas Vermaelen doubled Denilson's opener before William Gallas made it three before the break. Cesc Fabregas netted a second-half double before Eduardo scored a sixth two minutes from time.
Louis Saha grabbed an injury-time consolation for the home side but there were hardly any Blue shirts left in the ground to see it. Everton's wantaway defender Joleon Lescott was given a surprisingly warm reception by the home fans. But Lescott and his defensive partners were soon rocking as Arsenal quickly got into their stride. Nicklas Bendtner shot just over and Robin van Persie had an effort deflected by Lescott. And the breakthrough came after 26 minutes thanks to a flowing Gunners move. Bendtner showed superb control to chest down a long ball and wriggle away from two defenders before finding Cesc Fabregas.
The Barcelona target quickly shifted the ball on and Denilson was on hand to swerve the ball past Tim Howard from 25 yards. Denilson quickly made his mark at the other end as well as he cleared off the line from Marouane Fellaini. And the visitors killed off the home side with two goals in four minutes just before the break. First, Thomas Vermaelen found himself unmarked to head home Van Persie's free-kick. And William Gallas also made the most of slack marking to glance in Fabregas' set-piece. Everton were grateful for the half-time whistle to compose themselves and give David Moyes time to come up with Plan B, or C for that matter.
But any hope the Toffees had of clawing their way back into the game were shattered three minutes into the second half when the home side lost possession. Van Persie sent Fabregas through and he stroked home to make it four. More desperate Everton defending then allowed Fabregas to collect Manuel Almunia's throw out from goal. The Spaniard turned with no one within 20 yards of him and ran towards the Everton goal. Still there was no pressure on the ball and Fabregas simply moved himself across the 18-yard box before drilling past Howard into the far corner.
Eduardo found the net from close range on 88 minutes before Saha replied in injury-time.
Everton: Howard, Hibbert (Gosling 58), Yobo, Lescott, Baines, Osman (Saha 58), Neville, Cahill, Pienaar, Fellaini, Jo (Rodwell 58). Subs not used: Nash, Vaughan, Duffy, Baxter. Goals: Saha 90.
Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen, Clichy, Fabregas (Ramsey 72), Song Billong, Denilson, Bendtner (Eboue 63), van Persie (Eduardo 72), Arshavin. Subs not used: Mannone, Silvestre, Gibbs, Merida. Goals: Denilson 26, Vermaelen 37, Gallas 41, Fabregas 48, 69, Eduardo 88.

Rafael Ben?tez makes a spectacle of himself in referee rant
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00601/Sport_P68_Vorodin_5_601925a.jpg
Fury cross the Mersey: Ben?tez insists Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty
after Voronin went to ground after a challenge by Assou-Ekotto
Rafael Ben?tez last night launched a blistering attack on Phil Dowd, accusing the referee of an “unbelievable” decision that the Liverpool manager believed cost his team the chance to equalise in their 2-1 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur. Ben?tez believes Liverpool were denied a penalty when Andriy Voronin appeared to be felled in the box by Beno?t Assou-Ekotto in the closing stages of the encounter at White Hart Lane, only for Dowd to wave play on.
The Liverpool manager’s fury at that decision grew when his assistant manager, Sammy Lee, was sent to the stands by Dowd after an altercation with Stuart Attwell, the fourth official, who last season became the youngest referee to take charge of a Premier League fixture.
In Ben?tez’s eyes, though, Attwell is “too young” for such high-level responsibility at the age of 26 and the Spaniard risked censure by the Football Association by criticising both the fourth official and the match referee, even though he did concede the decision to turn down another Liverpool penalty claim for handball was probably the correct one. “I think everyone could see that it was a penalty on Voronin,” Ben?tez said. “It was so clear. The other one you can excuse by saying that it was ball to hand, that could be. But the other one was so clear that it was unbelievable.” Earlier in the match, Dowd had awarded Liverpool a penalty after Glen Johnson was brought down by Heurelho Gomes. Steven Gerrard duly scored from the spot.
When asked for his assessment of Dowd’s performance, Ben?tez calmly produced a case from the inside pocket of his suit jacket and pulled out a pair of spectacles without uttering another word. Pressed further about whether he thought it improbable that the referee would have awarded his team a second penalty in the light of Johnson winning an earlier spot kick, he simply added: “With this referee I knew that it was impossible.
“We had a meeting the other day where we were told that we could not talk about the referee as a person and his decisions but I think everyone could see today. The fourth official is a young referee and maybe he needs to calm down a little bit. I don’t know why Sammy was sent off. The fourth official was too young. I don’t know how old he is, but I think he is too young.”
Last season, Attwell made headlines for the wrong reasons when he awarded Reading a goal during their match with Watford at Vicarage Road, even though the ball had clearly missed the target by several feet. Later in the same season, Steve Bruce, the then Wigan Athletic manager, also accused Attwell of not being “ready to step up to the plate”.
Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, thrilled with the performance of his own team and the victory which came about courtesy of goals from Assou-Ekotto and S?bastien Bassong, on his debut, disagreed with his opposite number’s assessment of the Voronin penalty incident and refused to be drawn on Attwell. “The penalty that was given to Liverpool was nailed on, obviously,” Redknapp said. “Heurelho Gomes came out and he fouled Glen Johnson. But I didn’t see the others as penalties.”

ROBBIE BLAKE'S thunderbolt sent Manchester United crashing to defeat at Turf Moor. Blake, making his 250th appearance for the club, left Ben Foster well beaten after 19 minutes when he unleashed a right-foot volley. And the Clarets managed to hang on for a famous victory with keeper Brian Jensen turning away Michael Carrick's penalty.
United started brightly as they looked to build on their win against Birmingham at the weekend.
An early Patrice Evra cross flashed past Michael Owen at the near post before Park Ji Sung and Wayne Rooney both had shots blocked. Owen thought he had opened his Premier League account for Alex Ferguson's side when he raced away shortly afterwards. The striker finished at the second attempt after latching onto Evra's ball but the goal was ruled out for offside. Burnley's first chance fell to Steven Fletcher but the Scotland international failed to grab the opportunity to cover himself in glory.
He kicked thin air when attempting a volley and managed to sky his follow-up attempt over the bar.
The hosts nearly gifted United the lead when Stephen Jordan halted Carrick's run on goal. Jordan managed to nick the ball away from the England midfielder but was a relieved man with his clearance going out for a corner when it appeared destined to end up in his own net. Carrick's volley then landed on the roof of the net before Foster denied Martin Paterson at the other end.
Burnley maintained the pressure and when Evra could only nod a deep cross out to Blake, the veteran striker hammered a shot past Foster to open the scoring.
United were clearly stunned by the goal but had a golden opportunity to level before the break.
Advertisement Goal hero Blake sent Evra tumbling in the box and referee Alan Wiley wasted no time in pointing to the spot. Carrick stepped up to take the penalty but keeper Brian Jensen easily pushed his poor effort away after 44 minutes. Burnley continued to hold their own against the champions after the break and Blake was unlucky not to double the advantage with a free-kick which flew just wide seven minutes into the half. Ferguson threw on Antonio Valencia before the hour mark with the winger replacing Anderson.
But the change made little difference and United only came to life when Dimitar Berbatov replaced Owen. The Bulgarian striker was quickly denied by Jensen before Wade Elliott tested Foster's handling with a well-struck effort. Jensen came to the rescue again after 71 minutes, cutting the ball out with Giggs and Berbatov waiting to score. And he capped a magnificent individual performance by denying Berbatov when the United ace went through on goal as the clock ticked down.

ARSENE WENGER is ready to renew rivalries with Alex Ferguson after another Gunners romp. Arsenal host Celtic in midweek before travelling to Old Trafford for next Saturday's tea-time game.
And boss Wenger is licking his lips at the prospect after his side followed up their 6-1 win over Everton with a 4-1 pummelling of Portsmouth. He said: "We have had a brilliant start. It should create confidence and momentum. "We now go into another week which will be another test against Celtic and then Manchester United. "It looks to be exciting and interesting."
Abou Diaby netted twice in his 100th game for Arsenal. And Wenger drew comparisons with former Gunners skipper Patrick Vieira.
The Frenchman said: "When he decides to play more defensively, he is exactly like Vieira.
"He has quick transition from box to box. When we are on the counter-attack, he is fantastic.
"This could be his season. He has all you dream to have to play in the Premier League."
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas was replaced at half-time by Aaron Ramsey. And Wenger revealed the Spain midfielder could be out for a fortnight if his hamstring problem proves serious. He added: "If it is a little pull, he will be out for three weeks, if it is just tightness, maybe he can get away for Wednesday. "In 48 hours, we will have a better view."
William Gallas and Ramsey also netted for Arsenal, while Younes Kaboul replied for Portsmouth.

So what? You loosers
ARSENE WENGER was caught in a new storm after getting sent off at Old Trafford.
The Arsenal manager was sent packing by referee Mike Dean as he protested over Robin van Persie's disallowed goal deep into injury time in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United. Just 24 hours after his fierce defence of Eduardo for his Champions League theatrics, Wenger saw his own player Emmanuel Eboue get booked for diving.
But he brushed over that incident and instead accused a United player of being a hatchetman.
Wenger said: "I believe you should look at the game and who played with real spirit on the pitch today. I felt we played with the right spirit "It's difficult to judge every time someone goes down. Today I've seen a player make 20 fouls and there was no yellow card. Nobody sees it."
Asked to name the player, the Frenchman responded: "If you've seen the game you don't need me (to tell you). How this player got away without a yellow card is quite amazing." Wenger insisted he did nothing wrong as he booted a water bottle following Van Persie's disallowed goal. He added: "I didn't know you were not allowed to kick a water bottle - although it was a good kick. "We go home with no points and that is very frustrating. When you play like that to go home with no points is very difficult to accept. "You know what you get at Old Trafford when you come - every time - but I don't want to go into the performance of the ref. If you have any questions you shouldn't ask them to me."
United boss Alex Ferguson was delighted with his team's comeback from Andrey Arshavin's opener, with a Wayne Rooney penalty and an Abou Diaby own goal earning his side three points. Fergie said: "One down at half-time - it's always an uphill task against a team of Arsenal's capabilities.
"We had to dig deep and I think in fairness we really did perform well in the second half.
"Last season we lost four points to Arsenal and six to Liverpool. You have to try to correct these things as best you can."

ABOU DIABY gifted Manchester United three precious points at Old Trafford.
The Arsenal midfielder inexplicably headed into his own net as United came from behind to stay in touch with leaders Chelsea. Arsenal had stunned the champions thanks to Andrey Arshavin's rocket opener five minutes before the break.
But Wayne Rooney levelled from the spot before Diaby's gaffe handed United the points. Robin van Persie found the net in injury time but his effort was chalked off after William Gallas had strayed offside. Arsene Wenger could not believe the decision on the touchline and was promptly sent off for his protests. Rooney won his penalty in similar fashion to Eduardo's controversial Champions League spotkick for Arsenal in midweek - touching the ball past keeper Manuel Almunia before the contact brought him down. And Rooney insisted it was a clear foul. He said: "There was no doubt about the penalty. "I've got the ball past him and he's caught me."
Arsenal started well and Emmanuel Eboue had the first sniff of goal as he found space 25 yards out but dragged his effort wide. United finally found their feet after 10 minutes as Arsenal failed to clear their lines. Rooney sized up his options before chipping the ball forward to Darren Fletcher who chested down but spooned his effort over. Patrice Evra made a vital block on 25 minutes to divert Van Persie's shot for a corner. Ben Foster only cleared the set-piece to the edge of the area where Arshavin surged on to the loose ball before drilling his effort inches wide.
Rooney saw a free-kick go the wrong side of the post before the game exploded into life. Arshavin appealed for a penalty after Fletcher's sliding tackle brought him down. Referee Mike Dean waved play-on much to Wenger's disgust. But seconds later, the Gunners chief was all smiles as Arshavin picked up the ball in space 30 yards from goal. No one came to close him down and as he neared the edge of the penalty box he let fly and the wickedly swerving drive rocketed through Foster's arms.
Foster made amends with a brilliant save after the break to deny Van Persie, while at the other end Michael Carrick drove wide. Ryan Giggs then sparked United's comeback as he threaded a superb pass through to Rooney on 59 minutes.
The England striker took one touch past Almunia and contact was inevitable, with Rooney hitting the deck. Almunia was booked and then had to pick the ball out of the net as the United hitman sent him the wrong way with his spotkick. Van Persie hit the bar with a curling free-kick from wide on the right three minutes later. But the United fans were celebrating again within 60 seconds as Diaby headed Giggs' free-kick towards his own goal, leaving Almunia stranded as the ball bounced in.
Dimitar Berbatov had a superb chance to round off the scoring in injury time but he skewed his effort well wide. Almunia made a save from Nani soon after before the Portuguese winger blazed the rebound over.
Van Persie thought he had levelled in the 96th minute but it was ruled out, with Gallas offside from the original pass. Wenger again showed his disgust and was this time sent off by Dean as the game ended in thrilling fashion.

Fuming Wenger is sent to the stands _ marching orders
ARSENE WENGER will today receive a grovelling apology for his Old Trafford humiliation. The Arsenal boss was forced to stand among Manchester United fans for the final 30 SECONDS after fourth official Lee Probert complained he had kicked a water bottle.
Probert moaned to ref Mike Dean and he sent Wenger off - to the delight of 75,000 United supporters. But referees' chief Keith Hackett admitted last night Dean and Probert had goofed outrageously - and promised furious League Managers' Association chief Richard Bevan an apology was on its way.
Bevan said: "Although correct in 'law', it was completely out of context in the game and it was followed by the nonsense over where Wenger should sit. "I've spoken to Keith Hackett and he fully recognises the situation was an error and an apology will follow to Wenger. "Lee Probert totally failed to manage the situation." Wenger, angry after Robin van Persie's late effort was ruled offside, said: "It was weird, spectacular. I didn't even know where to go."

Arsene: Utd do it for the kicks
http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00878/Arsene_Wenger_280x3_878435a.jpg
Arsene reckons MANU Utd booted his team out of the game.
ARSENE WENGER has accused Manchester United of trying to kick his Arsenal team off the pitch. And he has warned Alex Ferguson that his Gunners can beat the Reds to the title. Arsenal collected six bookings during Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford - and a subsequent ?25,000 FA fine - to United's three.
But Wenger insisted one United player was more guilty than any other for dishing out fouls and claimed that is what the authorities should be punishing rather than Eduardo's midweek diving.
Wenger said: "There are other points that, for me, are more urgent - players who play only to make fouls and who are never punished. "Players who make repeated fouls and who are never punished and get out of the game without a yellow card.
"That, for me, is more anti-football than a player who has done what Eduardo did." Asked if he was referring to United midfielder Darren Fletcher, Wenger laughed and replied: "Why do you say the name?" Fletcher believed he performed no differently than in any other match. He said: "I enjoyed the challenge of going up against Arsenal in a big game. I did what I normally do - made some tackles, got about the opposition, no different to any other game." So much for the peace accord between United and Arsenal, which Reds boss Alex Ferguson had talked about on Friday.
Asked why he thinks United get away with fouls and Arsenal do not, Wenger declared: "I don't know. You should ask the referees. Look at how many deliberate fouls some players make and get away with. "I think that's a bigger problem. It cuts the flow of the game. And people come and pay to see football. They do not come to see free-kicks." Asked if he thought United set out deliberately to foul his players, he added: "You should ask them." Despite Arsenal's defeat, Wenger is still convinced his team can challenge United for their Premier crown. He said: "I think we are equipped to challenge for the title. Manchester United can improve but, frankly, when you compare the performances of the two teams, United won a game they should not have won. Yet that's a quality as well.
"I think we need more calmness. We were a bit too nervous and rushed our decisions in certain situations. "We looked mature on the pitch in terms of the positions we took up but, individually, there was still some nervousness there in some situations where it was not needed. "We were very strong. I'm very confident. I just hope this unexpected and undeserved defeat will not take any more confidence away. We go away now and I hope we respond well in two weeks."
Fletcher thought his team's own desire to grab a third goal was almost their undoing He added: "It was not very enjoyable at the end. They had four up front, we had four up front and I think we got carried away with the fans and emotion. "I think, at times, we need to be a bit more sensible and get men behind the ball when we are 2-1 up. But we got carried away trying to get the third goal. "We didn't throw it away, because their effort at the end was offside. But we were a bit lucky." Wayne Rooney, who won and scored the equalising penalty on the day, denied he had played for the kick. He said: "There was no doubt about my penalty. The goalkeeper took my legs from under me.
"Nobody really knew who would be the penalty taker this season. Michael Carrick, unfortunately, missed one at Burnley. Since then I have said I want to take them and, fortunately, I have scored." Ferguson was delighted with the character his team showed - in particular Fletcher and Rooney - as the champions came back from a goal down at the break to win courtesy of Abou Diaby's own-goal. He said: "We like to win and win well and did that in the second half.
"Wayne had a fantastic second half. He was unbelievable and got man of the match but I'd have given it to Darren. There were a lot of good performances in the second half, though." Ferguson clearly has his concerns over keeper Ben Foster, at fault for Andrey Arshavin's 25-yard opener.
The Scot added: "Ben Foster should have dealt with that. It was a bad goal to lose. It just shows. He has had two or three games in a row but still needs that experience. He has not had a lot, even though he is 26.
"But he did make a fantastic save with his feet at the start of the second half from Van Persie. If they had scored that, it would have killed us."
MANU are under severe pressure now despite winning their game against Arsenal and all referees will be under pressure to make sure that they do not favour the red devils. The apology from League Managers' Association is a big blow for AF and his th***s.

Chelsea hit by new signings ban
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/46314000/jpg/_46314676_newkakuta466.jpg
Kakuta, 18, joined Chelsea from French side Lens in 2007
Chelsea have been banned from signing any new players until January 2011 by football's governing body Fifa. The punishment was meted out after the Premier League club was found guilty of inducing French winger Gael Kakuta to break his contract with Lens in 2007.
"Chelsea are banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for the two next registration periods," said Fifa. Chelsea can appeal against the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Fifa's dispute resolution chamber (DRC) ruled Kakuta, now 18, must also pay compensation of 780,000 euros (?682,000), for which Chelsea are "jointly and severally liable". A spokesman for the London club told BBC Sport they were looking into the matter and hoped to issue a statement shortly.
Lens lodged a complaint with world football's governing body after Chelsea signed the winger two years ago. Now the DRC has ruled Kakuta breached his contract with Lens and that Chelsea induced him to do so. Fifa's statement continued: "The French club had lodged a claim with Fifa seeking compensation for breach of contract from the player and requesting also sporting sanctions to be imposed on the player and the English club for breach of contract and inducement to breach of contract.
"The DRC found that the player had indeed breached a contract signed with the French club. Equally, the DRC deemed it to be established that the English club induced the player to such breach." Chelsea must pay additional "training compensation" of 130,000 euros (?114,000) to Lens, while the player has been banned from playing in official matches for four months. Kakuta ended 2007/8, his first season with Chelsea, as the youth team's top scorer and was voted the academy's player of the year. He played five times for the youth team and twice for the reserves in his second season before it was brought to an abrupt end in February when he suffered a double fracture of his ankle.
The Lille-born youngster has never played for Chelsea's first team, although he is back to full fitness and has been featuring in the reserves this season. Fifa's decision to ban Chelsea means they will not be able to sign players in the next two transfer windows, which run from 1-31 January 2010 and then again from the end of the 2009/10 season until 31 August (Europe)/1 September, (Britain) 2010.
Lens president Gervais Martel said he felt the judgement was fair and would send out a warning message to larger clubs like Chelsea who break the rules. "We expected this kind of decision. The player was under contract with us and they came and stole him away from us," he said. "Chelsea didn't follow the rules. They contacted the player when he wasn't even 16 and while he had been contracted to our training group from the age of eight.
"The financial sanction isn't over the top given the nature of the infringement, but it's really quite significant when it comes to not being able to recruit players. "It's an important message given that protecting up and coming youth players who are contracted to clubs is an issue being followed closely by Uefa president Michel Platini." Fifa punished Switzerland's FC Sion for a similar offence in April and the club was told it could not sign players until the 2010 off-season. This was punishment for luring Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary in 2008 before his deal with Al-Ahly had expired. Like Kakuta, El Hadary received a four-month ban from playing.
Sion have appealed to CAS, which has frozen the sanctions while it considers the case, allowing the club to trade before the current season began. A ruling is expected later this year. Meanwhile Uefa, European football's governing body, is keen to introduce a rule preventing the international transfer of players under the age of 18 after member associations, clubs, leagues and players agreed to the principle.
Speaking in March, Uefa president Platini: "The question of minors is above all a moral and ethical issue. We have a duty to take concrete steps to protect young players and training clubs."

Just who is Gael Kakuta?
http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00881/Gael_Kakuta_881086a.jpg
Banned - Gael kakuta
HE could end up costing Chelsea a fortune and possibly even the Premier League title, but just who is Gael Kakuta? The 18-year-old midfielder is at the centre of one of the biggest football stories of the year after FIFA banned the Blues from signing players until 2011.
He chose to leave Lens in 2007 to move to Stamford Bridge, breaking a contract he had with the French club. Today's decision cost him ?682,000 and a four-month ban from football. In his first season with the Blues, Kakuta inspired them to the final of the FA Youth Cup. His tricky style, sublime ball control and finishing showed he was certain to hit the big time. Cutting in from the left wing, he was the top goalscorer that campaign and was also named the club's Academy Player of the Year. Kakuta was rewarded for his fine performances with a call-up for the France side for the UEFA Under-17 Championships last summer. He was named in the top 10 players to watch at the tournament as they reached the final, cementing his Europe-wide reputation.
Last term was less fruitful after a hamstring injury and a double ankle fracture ruled him out for most of the season. But he returned fit and firing this summer and was expected to play a major role in Chelsea's reserve campaign. Some fans even tipped him to break into Carlo Ancelotti's first team squad. However, the stunning verdict from FIFA has ended his hopes of featuring before next year. More crucially, the financial and footballing impact on the Blues is certain to prove even more costly. With the African Nations Cup in early 2010, boss Ancelotti will lose some of his top stars for up to a month.
That will leave Chelsea's squad threadbare and without the ability to strengthen, it could, ironically, leave him relying on players such as Kakuta to fill the gaps. But can they cope? Only time will tell...

Chelsea will suffer if transfer ban stands
Gael Kakuta was a name that barely registered on Chelsea's radar - let alone world football's - until he became the central figure in a landmark Fifa decision that could shape the short-term future at Stamford Bridge.
The 18-year-old winger, who the world governing body has adjudged was induced to breach a contract with Lens to join Chelsea in 2007, is regarded as a promising but hardly indispensable part of coach Carlo Ancelotti's plans. Swift and with natural goalscoring flair, Kakuta was the Chelsea Academy scholar of the year in 2008, but his recent story has been a series of injuries that have stalled his progress. He will now be sidelined for another four months as part of Fifa's wide-ranging punishment for his alleged poaching from Lens - most notably a ban on Chelsea signing any new players until January 2011.
Chelsea's rivals will see this as a chink in what has been impregnable armour so far this season, and this stranglehold on Ancelotti's transfer plans will provide a most unwelcome handicap as he fashions a new era at Stamford Bridge. Even if Chelsea get the ban reduced with what they say will be "the strongest appeal possible" to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland, a distinct possibilty, at the very least they are likely to spend the rest of this season with everything crossed in the hope that injuries and suspensions can be avoided.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/philmcnulty/gael595.jpg
Kakuta has yet to feature for Chelsea's first team
The January transfer window is traditionally a less than hectic time at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have suggested in the past that, unless circumstances are exceptional, the calibre of players they require are not on the market in the shorter window because they are usually ineligible for the Champions League or clubs are unwilling sellers. This January might be different if they fail to win an appeal, because of a twist of timing in football's packed calendar that leaves Chelsea, to some extent, at the mercy of the gods.
Chelsea are likely to lose Michael Essien, Salomon Kalou, Jon Mikel Obi and, arguably most crucially of all, Didier Drogba to the African Cup of Nations when it gets under way in Angola in early January. This a blow big enough in itself. Now Ancelotti must hope further strain is not put on his resources when the season enters this crucial phase. The power of owner Roman Abramovich's chequebook has always been an important safety net in emergencies, now it is on the point of being pulled away from under Chelsea's coach by forces beyond his control. Ancelotti's further concern, after a relatively low-key summer of activity in the transfer market, is that Chelsea's squad may be experienced but it will undoubtedly need freshening up during the period when the ban on transfers is scheduled to be imposed.
Chelsea are hardly a "Dad's Army" outfit, but they are not exactly youthful and light on their feet either. Young bloods are in short supply. Captain John Terry has a history of injuries in recent times and plenty of the squad are nearer the end of their careers than the start. There is security in the long-term contracts signed by Terry and Ashley Cole, but Ancelotti will want to marshal everything at his disposal, including a transfer fund, throughout the course of a taxing season. Of course what Chelsea have, and what Fifa can never take away, is an in-built resilience from the days of Jose Mourinho.
And a punishment of this sort is only likely to stiffen a siege mentality as they go in search of their first Champions League, the Holy Grail, and also try to reclaim the Premier League title that has resided at Old Trafford for the past three seasons. If Chelsea, as Fifa has ruled, induced Kakuta to leave the club that nurtured him, then it must be regarded as a laudible, landmark move to punish them. Chelsea will now plead their case vehemently, but as a general principle any move to protect clubs from having young talent they have invested time, money and resources in spirited away without at least fitting financial compensation is to be applauded.
It may also mean in future that smaller clubs will feel on a firmer footing when standing up to the richer rivals ready to prey on their production line of talent. Sympathy for Chelsea (of course the very words are likely to induce roars of laughter from around the community of Premier League supporters) may come with the hope that Fifa's net will claim more than just them. If Fifa actually believes Chelsea are the only club guilty of this particular offence in world football, then naivety is being stretched to its furthest point. Are we to seriously believe that? I do not. This is a can of worms that has yet to be fully opened.
For now, however, Fifa has embarrassed Chelsea by putting them in the dock. And even if they are successful in wiping out a portion of the punishment, it still stands a blow to their chances of success this season. Fifa's ruling might save Abramovich a few roubles on transfers - it might even get Kakuta a few games in the first team - but what will it cost when it comes to counting silverware? Chelsea must hope an investment in a promising, but unproven, youngster does not prove too expensive.
No worries in January for Arsene after off-loading the African contigent ... ... .. ...... . .... ....

You’re a bunch of thieves
CHELSEA were accused of 'stealing' French wonderkid Gael Kakuta last night after being hit with a 16-month transfer ban. The Blues were found guilty of inducing Kakuta to breach his contract with Lens in an historic ruling by FIFA.
And Premier League champions Manchester United could be next, after being reported over how they signed Le Havre prodigy Paul Pogba.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich (currently visiting Tanzania) will be stunned by the poaching verdict, which means boss Carlo Ancelotti cannot register any new players during the next two transfer windows - or until January 2011. Furious Lens president Gervais Martel said: "They stole the lad off us when he was 16. He was at our place since the age of 8?. It's a logical decision. Unfortunately, 95 times out of 100 it's English clubs who come and help themselves. "Chelsea behaved unacceptably by contacing the player before he was even 16 and in our youth academy."
Midfielder Kakuta, now 18, signed for Chelsea in 2007 while under contract to Lens. The French club complained and Chelsea were yesterday found guilty of 'inducing' Kakuta to breach that contract by FIFA's Dispute Resolution body. The Blues plan to fight the decision and sentence at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Kakuta is suspended by FIFA from playing for the next four months.
Meanwhile, minnows Le Havre have accused United of offering 'large amounts of money' to ex-French Under-16 captain Pogba's parents before the player's move to Old Trafford last month.
United vehemently deny the accusations but could face the same charges as Chelsea over Kakuta.
The Red Devils claim they were within their rights to sign the player, as he had not signed any legally binding Le Havre contract.
A United spokesman said: "These claims are complete nonsense. "Everything has been done within the UEFA guidelines." UEFA chief Michel Platini said of the Chesea ban: "This could be a start for putting in place regulations covering the movement of young players."
Ati Chelsiki wanakata rufaa?! Idiotism of highest degree, do they think they are in Russia were Romano got all his ill-fortune dubiously and run to hide at the bridge … …. Time will tell but we haven’t seen anything yet in this poker game.

THE BOOTIFUL GAME... Van Persie is floored by Adebayor's right boot
EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR has a tattoo on his arm saying: Only God can judge me.
Which may suggest to others you are above mere mortal sanction. This morning the FA, who sometimes confuse themselves with the Almighty, will take a close, judicial look at both incidents involving the Manchester City striker against former club Arsenal at Eastlands on Saturday. And, yes, a three-match ban looks a suitable punishment - for EACH offence. That is the boot in Robin van Persie's face and the pitch-length dash to celebrate in front of incensed Arsenal fans, making SIX games in all.
At a time when crowd incitement is very much a talking point, the FA have to be seen to be taking decisive action. This is no time for a rap across the knuckles with a feather duster. The only mitigating circumstances the big Togan can plead is whether Van Persie, no shrinking violet himself, may or may not have tried to get his own retaliation in first. Adebayor's own reaction could not have been more damning, though. As was the assessment of FA chief executive Ian Watmore, who was at the game. Watmore said: "I was pretty unimpressed with Adebayor." You can say what you like about the player being wound up by Arsenal fans and months of frustration being unleashed when he scored the third goal.
This cuts both ways. Gooners, in turn, will point to the huge frustration they also suffered at Adebayor's hands over his closing season at the Emirates. Trouble-maker and liberty-taker off the pitch, he staged his own, go-slow, work-to-rule on it. Had he showed half the pace and enthusiasm he committed to Saturday's sprint from one end of the field to the other in an Arsenal shirt last season, there would have been no need for Arsene Wenger to offload him. But that's Adebayor. When he's not in the mood, he drives you mad. When he is, he looks unplayable. It's not the problems he causes himself that is the main point. It's the trouble he causes others by his belief the world revolves around him. Next Sunday, City go into one of the most eagerly-awaited Manchester derbies for years at Old Trafford. Even before Saturday's game with Arsenal, they were going to have to do it without the injured Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and Robinho. Now they could well be without Adebayor as well.
Did this not enter his head? Is his self-centredness such that the bigger picture always escapes him? We didn't exactly see Kolo Toure, an Arsenal player for a considerably longer time, going mental. Then there's the whole business of City trying to project the right image. Flush with their Middle East billions and ability to spend ?200million in the past 12 months or so, they know they have to tread warily. This, after all, is an organisation that has prided itself on being a "proper club", a club with a real grass-roots feel about it and one, despite the suffocating presence of neighbours United, that built its own memorable history under Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison.
They don't want to make the same mistakes as Chelsea. They don't want to be seen as arrogant, uncaring, disrespectful of both new rivals who have been at the top for years and other, less fortunate clubs not blessed with the huge windfall they have stumbled across. City boss Mark Hughes, despite upsetting David Moyes with his undisguised pursuit of Joleon Lescott, has tried to do his best on this score. But he is not helped by Adebayor. After the game, the player said he had learned his lesson. Yesterday, though, he claimed: "I don't know what I have done wrong to get banned." I suppose placing stewards, who earn about five bob a game, at risk of serious injury because of his purile behaviour, goes over his enormous head. Not to mention putting his boot into someone else's. He still doesn't get it.

Remember without Arsenal, and particularly Arsene Wenger, he wouldn't be earning ?130,000 a week. Yet, his memory seems rather short. He treated his former team mates - those with whom got on as well as those with whom he had feuded - with a contempt that was not pleasant to watch. He slapped faces, he sneered, he mouthed off. In short, from the word go he was looking to take revenge for perceived slights during his time at the Emirates.
Revenge that reached its nadir with his assault on Robin van Persie. The more you watch his stamp in the Dutchman's face, the more clear it becomes that it was deliberate, it was calculated, it was callous. Moreover it was extraordinary none of the officials recognised it as such and that he stayed on the pitch.
It is in that context his celebration has to be viewed. It was not a red mist moment. It was not sudden impulse. It was part of a deliberately pre-planned campaign against the club that nurtured him, a campaign which, with the stamp on Van Persie, took him went way beyond the boundaries of wider sympathy. The shame is, Mark Hughes, the decent, thoughtful, intelligent manager who took a chance on Adebayor, who was prepared to allow him a second chance to prove that his talent outweighed his hot-headedness, has been deprived of the striker for his appointment at Old Trafford on Sunday. Already shorn by injury of Robinho, Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa Cruz, Hughes really needed Adebayor to be there.
Now, thanks to a pitifully self-indulgent display of stroppery, the Togo international will be absent, thus hugely undermining the group effort at City. As such, no-one can have the remotest sympathy with him. The idiot deserves to have the book thrown at him.
We have seen so many times, players when playing for opposing teams even if they score they do not celebrate to show respect to their former teams what ever the circumstances. Ade shamed the majority who loves the beautiful game. Is he a jackass?

GRIN 'N BEAR IT ... Fergie jokes with fourth official Wiley as Hughes looks on
MANCHESTER CITY will complain to the FA over the behaviour of fourth official Alan Wiley in Sunday's heated derby. City are furious with Wiley for shooing away boss Mark Hughes when he questioned where all the added time had come from. Then Wiley stood laughing with United boss Alex Ferguson after Michael Owen's 96th-minute winner.
"The additional time after the four minutes didn't sit comfortably with me. We feel aggrieved.
"Everyone in the stadium knew the time allotted. I would like an explanation why more was added on but I rather doubt I will get it. "The fourth official said time was added because of our goal celebration but that lasted only 45 seconds." City are just as angry over Wiley's rude treatment of Hughes only to cosy up and share a joke with Ferguson. That just added to the hurt and sense of injustice for City who equalised three times before eventually going down 4-3. Hughes now has to lift his players for tomorrow's Carling Cup tie with Fulham at Eastlands.
He said: "It is a bit raw at the moment to see any positives but we will pick the bones out of the match and be ready to go again on Wednesday in a competition that is important to us."

Cech Mate ... .... Chelsea keeper petr Cech
tries to urgue his case
after getting red card.
PETR CECH was sent off as Chelsea lost their 100 per cent start to the season.
Cech got an early bath for bringing down Hugo Rodallega as he charged through on goal. The Wigan striker converted the spotkick as the Latics gained their first ever Premier League win against a Big Four team. Titus Bramble had given the home side a shock lead with his first goal in 10 months.
Didier Drogba hit back for the Blues but Cech's sending-off turned the game Wigan's way, with Paul Scharner adding a third in injury time.
Chelsea almost made the breakthrough after two minutes as Michael Essien connected well with Ashley Cole's cutback. But Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland turned the ball behind. Nicolas Anelka shot wide and Frank Lampard tested Kirkland with a free-kick as Chelsea looked for an early lead. Lampard sent another effort wide of the post before Jason Scotland forced a good save from Cech.
Scotland's effort gave Wigan a shot of confidence and they stunned the league leaders soon after with the opening goal. Bramble got away from his marker and sent his header into the corner of the net following a cross from Charles N'Zogbia. Chelsea hit back and Florent Malouda got on the end of a ball from Cole but his touch was poor and Kirkland was able to make the clearance.
Scharner clipped a shot over as Wigan kept up the pressure. And the Blues needed a wonder save from Cech to prevent the Latics doubling their lead on 39 minutes. Emmerson Boyce stole in to pounce on Scharner's flick but Cech made a point-blank stop to deny the defender. Chelsea drew level just two minutes after half-time as an embarrassed Kirkland let Drogba's innocuous shot squirm through his legs over the line. And the visitors almost took the lead on 50 minutes, only for Scharner to block John Terry's effort after Ricardo Carvalho's flick-on. The game took a dramatic turn a minute later when Cech was given a straight red card for tripping Rodallega as he raced into the area.
Cech was incensed at the decision and so were his team-mates as a penalty was awarded. Hilario stepped between the posts - with Malouda coming off - and his first job was to pick the ball out of the net with Rodallega converting his spot-kick. Lampard put a header over as Chelsea looked for a leveller. But the visitors were reduced to nine men after Cole went off injured. And Scharner made sure of the points in injury time as he converted Maynor Figueroa's centre.
Wigan: Kirkland, Melchiot, Boyce, Bramble, Figueroa, Thomas, Rodallega, Diame, N'Zogbia, Scharner, Scotland (King 88). Subs not used: Pollitt, Amaya, Cho, Koumas, Gomez, De Ridder. Booked: Thomas. Goals: Bramble 16, Rodallega 53 pen, Scharner 90.

Kenwyne Jones anamshinda Foster Care
na kuweka bao la pili
ANTON FERDINAND'S own goal got Ben Foster off the hook at Old Trafford.
Ferdinand inexplicably tried to block Patrice Evra's wayward shot in the third minute of injury time. The ball ricocheted off the Sunderland defender and past a helpless Craig Gordon to earn Manchester United a dramatic point. Foster looked to have gifted Sunderland victory after flapping at an Andy Reid cross to allow Kenwyne Jones a scruffy goal. But Ferdinand's intervention, after Kieran Richardson's red card, earned United more injury-time points following their last-gasp 4-3 win over Manchester City last month. Darren Bent had earlier shocked the home side with a seventh-minute strike.
But Dimitar Berbatov's sublime volley brought the home side level before another dramatic finale at Old Trafford. Foster's gaffe, though, highlighted the need for Alex Ferguson to get first-choice No1 Edwin van Der Sar back quickly. Sunderland rocked Old Trafford after just seven minutes as Bent belted home his seventh goal of the campaign. He received Lee Cattermole's pass with his back to goal 25 yards out. But an instant touch took him away from John O'Shea and he swivelled to beat Foster with a precise shot inside the near post. Foster kept out Jones' long-range effort but United kept losing possession. Disaster nearly struck for Sunderland nine minutes before the break when Nani's cross appeared to bounce on to Reid's arm.
TV replays appeared to show contact but referee Alan Wiley waved play on. Wayne Rooney was lucky to escape a booking after kicking out at Reid. But all United's players were looking frustrated as they failed to break down the visitors. Anderson came on for Paul Scholes at the break and it took United just six minutes to level. Rooney had already seen a shot blocked by Ferdinand before his close-range effort was blocked by Gordon with his first meaningful save. But O'Shea quickly turned the ball back in to an unmarked Berbatov, who left the ground to volley precisely into the bottom corner. But Foster then gifted Sunderland the lead straight back as he failed to deal with Reid's chipped pass. Jones challenged the keeper and the ball rebounded the right way to drop into an empty net.
Danny Welbeck fired over from distance as United responded and Rooney's right-footed effort whistled wide. Black Cats boss Steve Bruce sent on youngster Jordan Henderson and he was straight into the action with a flying run down the right wing. He fed Malbranque, who in turn passed towards Jones, only for sub Michael Carrick to prevent a certain goal with a crucial interception. Richardson was sent off five minutes from time for kicking the ball away and earning a second yellow card. That gave United a lift and Nemanja Vidic headed over. Four minutes of added time was shown and United sensed another turnaround.
They rained shots in on Gordon's goal but it was an off-target effort from Evra that ended up in the net off the unfortunate Ferdinand.

Fabregas inspires Arsenal to win
Arsene Wenger celebrated becoming Arsenal's longest-serving manager by watching his side register a 6-2 victory over Blackburn Rovers at the Emirates. The French tactician's 13-year tenure in charge of the Gunners meant he overtook George Allison's record and to commemorate the milestone, his side twice come from behind to hit Rovers for six. And it was fitting that the victory should be inspired by Cesc Fabregas, a player who typifies Wenger's influence on the club hacing come through the ranks to become captain.
Fabregas made four goals - for Thomas Vermaelen, Robin Van Persie, Andrei Arshavin and the returning Theo Walcott - and scored one himself as Arsenal ran out comfortable winners in the end.
But it was not all plain sailing and they twice fell behind, first to Steven Nzonzi's opener and then to David Dunn's effort, both in the first half. Substitute Nicklas Bendtner added further gloss to the scoreline with a late sixth as Arsenal moved up to fourth thanks to the goals for column, which now reads 14.
Thiery Henry was watching at the stands and Patric Viera was delayed in transport hicups to cap the 13 years of Wenger.

Cesc: Me join Barca? Kiss-off!
CESC FABREGAS gave Blackburn the boot and then told pundits linking him with Barcelona to kiss-off. Arsenal's Spanish wizard netted once and set up four other goals in the Gunners' 6-2 comeback win. And the midfielder claimed he kissed Arsenal's badge after scoring to show he is fed up with transfer talk. Fabregas said: "I am committed to this club. It is my seventh season here.
"It is hard to hear people saying I am not committed. It was a good time to show I love this club." The playmaker, 22, claimed the Gunners can still improve ? despite hitting six for the second time this season. He said: "We did not do well in the first 10 to 15 minutes and were a bit shaky defensively. "But after the goal we did well and it was a good game. "We can do better ? it is just one more game in the race for the title. "I am happy with all the team's performance."

Arsenal scored goals this season so far with 15 different players, today a total of 6 players on a score sheet. It gives an opposition team a difficult task to try to stop them scoring, goals come from different players all the time. Will Arsenal deliver this season? That is a big question everyone wants to be answered, but judging from their performance so far anything can happen ..... expect great things from this youngsters if they stay together.
Players coming up from injuries- Walcott, Nasri, Rosiscky, Eduardo, Denilson and Almunia (all top of the draw) .... - scary thing for other clubs.
It felt as if a party planner had been feverishly hard at work. This match marked Ars?ne Wenger’s thirteenth anniversary as Arsenal manager. His reign began against Blackburn Rovers, which provided nice symmetry, but Wenger is now the club’s longest serving manager, so much more than pleasing coincidences were required. And oh, how the fans got them. Both sides served up a match of goals, passion and quality. There was a truly awesome performance from Cesc F?bregas, who, upon scoring the fourth goal, kissed his badge and revealed that he did so in premeditation after repeated speculation that he would like to move back to Spain.
“There is always speculation I don’t like it here,” F?bregas said. “I’m committed to this club 100 per cent. It is my seventh season and it’s hard to hear people saying I’m not committed enough. It was a good time to show that I really love this club.” His manager agreed, saying that the best answer to those who doubt his captain is for him “to play well on the football pitch”, which smacks just a little of understatement.
This was one of F?bregas’s most breathtaking performances. Before being substituted to a standing ovation, he set up four goals and scored one after five attempts on target. However, it was the man dubbed as the new Patrick Vieira who headed in an early goal to set the pulses and the nostalgia racing. Only this tall midfield player, despite speculation that the original version will be back in North London come the new year, was playing for Blackburn, not Arsenal. Steven Nzonzi dwarfed the usually imposing Thomas Vermaelen and headed past Vito Mannone. The Italian had managed to amass 359 minutes without conceding a goal but Arsenal’s third-choice man to don the gloves was undone by a fellow goalkeeper as Paul Robinson lofted a goalkick up to the gangly Frenchman.
Robin van Persie rattled the crossbar shortly afterwards but Arsenal’s equaliser needed, given the significance of the occasion, to be a little more meaningful and so it came courtesy of Vermaelen. He is quickly emerging as the Barclays Premier League’s most versatile defender. This was his fifth goal in his first season in England and a beauty to boot, firing in from 25 yards with his veins pumping in desire to make amends for his previous error.
In the stands Thierry Henry applauded and Wenger’s side flooded forward, only for Blackburn to take the lead again after David Dunn’s strike deflected in off William Gallas. It was not the France defender who equalised, though, but Van Persie, latching on to a tantalisingly well-timed pass from F?bregas. The Spaniard proceeded to set up the third goal, with trademark subtlety, for Andrey Arshavin. With the score at 3-2, Vermaelen fouled Dunn in the area but no spot-kick was awarded, leading Sam Allardyce to complain that referees are not good enough. “Major decisions like that could take you into the relegation zone,” the Blackburn manager said. “The system is not working. I know I’m 100 per cent right.”
An indication of the dominance of F?bregas came when Dunn stood and grinned upon being disposed by F?bregas as if he was thinking, “The man’s a genius, what I am supposed to do?” while F?bregas powered farther upfield and duly scored, controlling Tomas Rosicky’s pass with his chest and hitting the ball on the half-volley to loop it into Robinson’s top right-hand corner. F?bregas’s final flourish was to dink the ball on to Theo Walcott for his first significant touch of the season to give Arsenal a three-goal cushion. Aaron Ramsey came on for F?bregas and, in the best traditions of the dutiful understudy, performed with a similar level of panache, playing two superb passes through to Walcott, who failed to beat Robinson.
But Arsenal’s final goal was a solo affair, a dramatic way to punctuate a sublime team display. Nicklas Bendtner scorched the net with a right-foot strike filled with the sort of confidence that can come only when your team have the match wrapped up. Fabio Capello may have had Walcott in mind when he arrived at the Emirates Stadium but Robinson proved an interesting diversion. As Wenger put it: “Today we scored six and their ’keeper had a great game.”
Curtis Mayfield’s Move On Up was played at the final whistle but Arsenal’s progress up the league table somehow felt secondary to the celebration of the loyalty of their manager overseeing his 746th match. “We are in a strong position despite the fact we have lost two games,” Wenger said.

PORTSMOUTH have appointed Avram Grant as
their new director of football.
http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00903/Alex_Ferguson_280x3_903488a.jpg
FA must kick out Fergie!
ALEX FERGUSON is facing mounting pressure to have him kicked out of football.
The union for referees has demanded the FA get tough with the Manchester United boss for accusing Alan Wiley of being unfit. Alan Leighton, the national secretary of Prospect, says banning Ferguson from the touchline or giving him a hefty fine would have no effect. He wants the FA to "grab the nettle" and banish him for good. Leighton said: "I don't know what Sir Alex earns but a small fine or a touchline suspension would be like water off a duck's back to him. "So I think there has to be some recognition that this is a serious allegation that needs to be properly dealt with and punished severely.
"There are issues around suspension from the job that would be new territory that hasn't happened before, but I think the FA has to grab the nettle on this one. "There has to be some punishment that is going to stop people from doing this or otherwise we are going to see more and more of it. "We have to talk about punishments that are going to really lead to a change in behaviour." Leighton insisted: "I think the FA has to act on this. There is no future with the Respect campaign if the FA don't act. "I see the FA have asked him to explain his comments. I'm not really sure what requires explanation.
"I would like to see the FA act quickly to restore Alan's reputation and ensure referees get some protection from what seems to be a growing approach that managers feel they can abuse them." Ferguson accused Wiley of being unfit to referee United's clash with Sunderland at Old Trafford last Saturday.
The 18 full-time officials, who earn a ?50,000 basic salary from the Professional Game Match Officials Board, are put through their paces once a year with a tough workout at Warwick University and constantly monitored.
To earn his whistle, a ref must:
Complete six 40m sprints in 6.2sec or less with a 30sec break in between.
After a 10min break, do 20 repetitions of running 150m in 30sec, then walking 50m in 35sec.
Train each week throughout the season and send in their data and match data recorded by heart monitors to PGMOB fitness instructors.

Its gonna be messy
ANGRY refs have SNUBBED Sir Alex Ferguson's apology to Alan Wiley.
The Manchester United boss has said sorry for his blast at the ref after last Saturday's 2-2 draw with Sunderland.
But last night the referees' union Prospect threatened to SUE Fergie after his statement also seemed to question the fitness of all refs. They are furious that Fergie appeared to question the fitness of ALL referees in his statement. Alan Leighton, national secretary of Prospect, insists Ferguson's response only "cranked up" his apparent belief that referees like Wiley are not fit enough to do their job. And Leighton told the Sport of the World: "If the FA don't satisfy us, we would have to take legal advice. Any issue of defamation would be against Sir Alex."
But he warned that the ref's union would also demand a showdown with the FA about their disciplinary system if Fergie is cleared on the basis of a statement they refuse to accept.
Leighton insists the Red Devils chief should still be hit with a UEFA-style coaching ban.
He claimed all referees were affronted by Ferguson's attack - and not just Wiley, who almost quit in disgust over the outburst which followed his handling of last Saturday's 2-2 draw with Sunderland.
A ProZone analysis proved Fergie wrong, showing that only seven players in the game ran further than Wiley.
But the select group of Premier League officials are fearful that the FA will now let Fergie off the hook, leaving them open to further tirades. Leighton said: "We're very anxious not to have this seen as Referees v Sir Alex Ferguson, but he doesn't help himself in many ways. "It looks good in that he says he has always respected Alan Wiley's integrity and has never said he was biased or a bad ref.
"But he doesn't withdraw his remark about Alan not being fit or apologise for it. And saying a referee is not fit is actually questioning his integrity. "A key component of refereeing is being fit, so Sir Alex has questioned his integrity. And I'm surprised he hasn't realised that.
"Further, he's now making aspersions about other referees, suggesting they are not fit.
"He doesn't seem to understand the enormity of what he is saying here. If they are not fit then they can't be fit to referee. "What Sir Alex appears to be trying to do is to say he has apologised and therefore that should be the end of the matter. But what he's done is crank it up. "He mentions referees' fitness as a serious and important issue. By saying that, he has widened the debate.
"Alan Wiley will find it very difficult in his next game.
"How long before the chant goes up, 'You're not fit to referee'? "Other referees will now come under the same spotlight, as they are already doing on message boards." Referees were pushing for Fergie not just to be fined and handed a touchline ban but also to be prevented from carrying out team talks before a game and at half-time, a punishment handed down by UEFA to Jose Mourinho during his Chelsea days. "We hope there's a meaningful punishment," said Leighton. "This is a huge topic and it isn't going to go away on this partial apology. I'd be very disappointed if the FA duck the issue.
"Should that happen, we would want to talk to them about tightening the punishment system in future." Leighton added: "One of the issues is whether there has been defamation. We haven't gone to the lawyers yet. We're still hoping for a full and proper apology. And we're still waiting to see what the FA do before going down that route." FA chiefs are now likely to be forced into convening an emergency session tomorrow. To a man, referees and their bosses are disgusted with the inadequacy of Ferguson's statement and his apparent slur on all officials.

Wenger - Referees should keep their distance
http://www.arsenal.com/assets/_files/images/oct_09/gun__1255700437_wiley_alan.jpg
Alan Wiley referees Manchester United v Sunderland
Ars?ne Wenger has no complaints about the fitness levels of referees in the Premier League but he would like match officials to ?keep their distance? from players and managers. The physical condition of referees has been on the agenda since Alan Wiley was criticised by Sir Alex Ferguson following Manchester United?s 2-2 draw with Sunderland a fortnight ago. The Scot suggested that Wiley was not fit enough to keep up with the game at Old Trafford and has since apologised for his remarks. According to Wenger, fitness is not a problem area for referees but their tendency to be ?friendly? with some players and managers is a cause for concern. ?I believe that physically compared to ten years ago they are fitter,? said the Frenchman. ?Fitness-wise there is no problem in England with the referees.
?I have no relationship with the referee. I never speak to any referee. I believe what was shocking in that [Man United v Sunderland] game was not only what happened with Ferguson and the fourth official. I believe that the referees have to keep their distance with the players as well. ?Personally I respect the referees and I think the referees have to keep their distances from the managers and the players.? Wenger was asked if he backed calls for Ferguson to be punished for his attack on Wiley. The Arsenal manager refused to be drawn on the matter. ?I believe he apologised and it?s not down to me to say what the punishment should be. It is not my problem basically,? said Wenger. ?You know we are sometimes too excessive after the games. What the punishment should be is not my problem. What we want is for everybody to be treated exactly the same so there is only one rule in the Premier League. ?When the managers do not respect the code of conduct, this rule has to be applied to everybody and I don?t think even Ferguson would want to be treated differently.?

ARSENE WENGER relived one of the most traumatic games in his career saying: "I feared Eduardo would never play again." Arsenal host Birmingham today, their first meeting since the St Andrew's draw that wrecked the Gunners' 2007-08 title hopes.
Martin Taylor's X-rated tackle left Eduardo with a double leg break and also shattered his team-mates. Gael Clichy gave away a last-minute penalty which cost Arsenal two points and his howler led to then-skipper William Gallas' sit-down protest as the Gunners' dressing room imploded.
Gunners would have opened up and eight-point gap on the chasing pack had they beaten the Brummies. But after that agonising draw against Birmingham, shell-shocked Arsenal went on to win just one of their next eight league games and handed the title to Manchester United.
Wenger said: "What sticks in the mind? That we didn't win the game and that Eduardo was severely injured. There were a lot of incidents. The penalty, Gallas's explosion a little bit.
"I still believe that was a big blow. We lost Eduardo for the season and we dropped two points. We couldn't win after that.
"My concern was for Eduardo. Will he play again? Will he be injured for ever? How long will he be out?" Wenger was fuming after the game and called for Taylor to be banned for life and then to be suspended for as long as Eduardo stayed out. Neither Taylor nor Eduardo is fit for today's game but Wenger insisted there would not have been any worry had they faced up. He said: "No there were no fears. I was very angry after that game. I was a bit excessive maybe against Taylor. I apologised after that but I still think it was a clumsy tackle. It was a shock for the team to see the leg of Eduardo.
"I don't remember what was the first thing I said to him, but it was a very, very bad day. What saved his career was the action of our physios and the quality of the surgeon." Rarely does a game have such huge impact on a club but it certainly did for Arsenal. Wenger said: "I don't believe we fell apart. It was a shock. With these things it is difficult to measure the percentage impact it had on whether we lost the league or not. "We lost at Liverpool in the Champions League in strange circumstances and that contributed as well. We didn't deserve to go out. After that everything became a bit of a snowball effect. It is difficult to isolate one single incident."
Yet TV images of Wenger striding out on to the pitch almost 10 minutes after the final whistle to drag Gallas - sitting on the pitch - back into the dressing room gave a graphic account of the disintegration of the Arsenal dressing room.
Wenger said: "When you are in that situation you want to try to calm everybody down and that is what I tried to do. "We were very disappointed because we dropped two points and we lost Eduardo. Your job as a manager is to try to sort these human problems out and when you have sorted one out you have another one and so on. "One human problem on the day was Eduardo's state of mind and another was Gallas' state of mind." Gallas went on to lose the captaincy last November after publicising details of dressing-room strife in his autobiography. But he has bounced back this season and is repaying Wenger with sterling showings.
Wenger added: "I think he deserves a lot of credit for the way he responded. He is today a better player and he is today the vice-captain of the French national team."

BALLOONACY ... Darren Bent's shot flies
into the net off the Liverpool balloon
LIVERPOOL'S title charge burst as a BALLOON stunned them at Sunderland.
Darren Bent's third-minute shot took a huge deflection as it flew past helplesss keeper Pepe Reina. The balloon was thrown onto the pitch by a LIVERPOOL fan just seconds before the goal. The Reds were fuming and protested about the incident but the strike stood. It leaves Rafa Benitez's side in eighth in the Premier League and SEVEN points behind leaders Chelsea.
Sunderland started brightly and midfielder Andy Reid sliced his left-foot effort high and wide inside the opening minutes. But Bent was on target for Sunderland's bizarre opener.
The striker picked up the ball just inside the box and hit his shot directly at Kop keeper Pepe Reina. However, it struck the balloon in front of Reina, confusing the Spaniard, who dived the wrong way as the ball flew into the net.
Liverpool were furious and protested to referee Mike Jones and his assistant but any claims fell on deaf ears. The Reds were furious, and it could have got worse as Lorik Cana met Reid's corner with a firm header but he missed the target. Craig Gordon saved well from Ryan Babel before Bent tested Reina soon after. Yossi Benayoun had a shot deflected wide and Fabio Aurelio also went close with a free-kick.
Liverpool tried to press for the leveller but the hosts responded by attacking. Reid almost caught out Reina with a wind-assisted set piece before Bent fired wide. Sunderland might have doubled their lead when Kenwyne Jones slid in Bent, who rounded Reina before shooting, but the keeper recovered in time to save. Bent was in again when he latched on to a weak header to beat Reina to the ball and shoot against the foot of the post. Bruce and Benitez became involved in a furious row on the sidelines as the injured Jones was treated on the pitch.
But the fourth official eventually separated the pair as tensions grew.
Benitez made a number of switches as the match went on but his side could not muster the equaliser they desperately wanted.

MIKE JONES is set to be bounced off this weekend's match list for his beachball clanger at Sunderland. The Cheshire ref allowed Darren Bent's winner against Liverpool to stand after it cannoned in off a red beachball thrown on to the pitch by a young Kop fan. But the effort should have been chalked off and the match stopped.
Jones, 41, in his second League season, will be asked to explain his actions - as will his three assistants - after all appeared unsure about the rules. According to FIFA's laws, the goal should have been disallowed because of 'outside interference'. Jones will be hammered when the Professional Game Match Officials board meets today. Former top ref Dermot Gallacher said: "It was such a glaring error. Everybody knows that when something encroaches on to the pitch the game stops."[/size]

Barclays agrees new Premier deal
The Premier League and Barclays have agreed a new three-year sponsorship deal worth ?82.25m. The new deal will take the bank's sponsorship of the English top-flight up to the end of the 2012/13 season. League chiefs had initially rejected a lower offer from the bank, who have backed the Premier League since 2004. "We are extremely pleased that our long established partnership with Barclays will continue," said Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore.
The value of the new deal represents a 25% increase on the current ?65.8m agreement. This is a reflection of the ongoing strength of the Premier League in a sponsorship market place that has suffered as a result of the economic downturn. "The Premier League's strength is that it is an essentially English competition that has gained a huge international following," said Scudamore. "This clearly resonates with Barclays' own business development and aspirations.
"Barclays' commitment is critical to helping us continue to put on a top quality football competition that is watched and enjoyed by football fans at home as well as across the world." The Premier League was formed in 1992 and has had a sponsor since 1993. From 2001 until 2004, Barclaycard was the official sponsor and before that it was the Carling lager brand. Barclays were one of the few major banks not to be bailed out by the British government last year and in afternoon trading on the London Stock Exchange on Friday their share price was up 1.2% at 363.3p.

Benitez sings Kop's praises
http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00915/rafa_280x390_915408a.jpg
RAFA BENITEZ praised Liverpool's fans after his side derailed Manchester United's bid to return to the top of the table. A win at Anfield would have moved United above Chelsea following their 5-0 demolition of Blackburn on Saturday. But second-half goals from Fernando Torres and David Ngog ensured left Merseyside empty-handed. And Benitez, who had not seen the Reds win since last month, said: "The players showed character and the fans were behind them — we had 12 men.
"The mentality was good, everyone was working together, from the keeper Pepe Reina to the last fan on the Kop. "The players answered a lot of questions, that is the most important thing."
Liverpool went into the game on the back of four defeats since their 6-1 thrashing of Hull on September 26. The dismal run had raised question marks about Benitez's ability to ensure the Reds remain title contenders. But with managing director Christian Purslow backing him before kick-off, the Spaniard was content with a job well done. He said: "For me, this result proves the team is better than people think — and it shows the character and quality we have.
"I was not really angry about the speculation, I was just trying to be focused on my job.
"The only way to change things in football is to win games."

Fergie gang ‘bully’ Rafa
ALEX FERGUSON has been accused of leading a group of Premier League bosses who gang up against Rafa Benitez. The amazing claim was made last night by Wigan manager Roberto Martinez. He also insisted the FA are terrified of Fergie's power over the Premier League. Martinez said: "Ferguson has his group of loyalists among other coaches - Steve Bruce, his ex-player, and Sam Allardyce, who thinks he will be his successor, among others.
"On the other hand, there is only Benitez and they throw sticks at him from all sides." Liverpool chief Benitez caused a storm last season by accusing Manchester United boss Ferguson of having too much power and getting away with too much with the FA. And Martinez reckons fellow Spaniard Benitez' criticism was spot-on. Fergie is currently sweating over an FA hearing into comments he made accusing ref Alan Wiley of not being fit enough. Asked if he reckons Fergie DOES have too much power, Martinez added: "Yes, a lot. "The FA have charged him for saying a referee was not physically up to scratch. "The reality is they have almost begged his forgiveness for doing so. Anyone else, they'd have crushed."

Wenger - Team with the most quality will win
Ars?ne Wenger believes the team that shows the best technical ability will triumph on Saturday, despite the added pressure the North London derby brings. The Frenchman is preparing himself for the 162nd meeting of Arsenal and Tottenham and says the importance of the game to both sets of fans gives his players an added lift. Yet skill always wins through. "There is a little bit of extra-special motivation for everybody to win," he said
"But at the end of the day, when the game starts it will be down to the quality of the display, no matter how much other psychological involvement is in the game. "That is why we want to focus on the technical part of the game completely and play as well as we can."
Man Utd wanawakaribisha Blackburn Rovers pale Old Trafford ( 17:30 GMT) wakati Bolton watawakaribisha Chelsea. Everton watakumbana na Aston Villa na mechi nyingine ni kwa vijana wa Cottagers pale London wakati Fulham watawakaribisha Liverpool ..........hizi mechi zitaanza 15:00 GMT

RAFA BENITEZ faces a fight to save his Anfield career after Fulham condemned Liverpool to their fifth league defeat of the season. Defenders Phillipp Degen and Jamie Carragher were both sent off at Craven Cottage as the Reds awful form continued. Goals from Bobby Zamora, Erik Nevland and midfielder Clint Dempsey heaped more misery on Benitez, with Fernando Torres grabing Liverpool's one consolation. Tactical errors, baffling substitutions and a lack of creativity have left the Merseysiders' championship dreams in tatters. Many of Benitez's decisions left the travelling supporters stunned, none more so than when he hauled off star striker Fernando Torres after an hour with the game poised at 1-1.
We had wondered what the significance was of their stirring victory over Manchester United last weekend. Well, now it looks a one-off. A lone bright spot in a season which could get even darker next Wednesday when Liverpool travel to Lyon for a match which could see them effectively knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages. After this result they might just be out of the Premier League race, too. The pressure is building on Benitez. And with the Reds faithful once more booing his substitution of Yossi Benayoun the steam is hissing all around him. Bizarrely, it was a match in which Liverpool dictated most of the play. They pressed forward with lots of effort, often against a wall of white shirts.
But for vast swathes of the game, they struggled to supply the quality to go with their industry. Yet it was the home side who took the lead on 24 minutes against the run of play after Sotirios Kyrgiakos gave away possession by directing a header straight to Damien Duff. The Irishman hit an instant low cross to the far post and Bobby Zamora powered the ball into the back of the net past a helpless Jose Reina. Fulham looked tidy in possession and were growing in confidence with Zamora combining well with Duff in a move which saw Liverpool's Greek defender Kyrgiakos produce a spectacular diving header to clear the danger. But after 42 minutes the Reds were level and unsurprisingly it was that man Torres.
There seemed little danger when Andriy Voronin's header came back off a defender but the Spaniard swivelled to hit a fabulous volley from the edge of the box which scorched past Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer for his 10th league goal of the season. The second half saw the visitors almost gift Fulham a second, as Carragher was almost beaten by a dodgy bounce with Zamora lurking. However, the Reds captain recovered just in time to adjust his footing and head the ball back to Reina. Zamora then raced towards the byline and pulled the ball back for Zoltan Gera, but the Hungarian shot straight at Reina. And the former Tottenham hitman caused havoc again two minutes later, charging into the area and causing Carragher all sorts of problems. The defender gave chase and leant on the striker, who crashed to the deck but the referee waved Zamora's penalty claims away. Rafa Benitez then stunned the travelling support by hauling off Torres on the hour mark. The Spanish international did not look injured and sprinted off the pitch to be replaced by Ryan Babel.
Voronin then had a chance and slotted in Benayoun, but the Israel international's effort was blocked by a wall of Fulham defenders. Zamora was in the thick of the action again on 66 minutes, rolling his marker and smashing a shot high over Reina's goal. But six minutes later, the home side took the lead again. Paul Konchesky showed a quick turn of pace to accelerate down the line and cross into the box. Reina got a touch to the ball but could only turn it towards Gera, who knocked it back to Nevland to head home from close range. Benitez then stunned his own fans again by taking off Benayoun — who had arguably been Liverpool's best player — to replace him with 18-year-old Nathan Ecclestone. Things went from bad to worse on 77 minutes as Degen saw red on his full league debut after going in with studs raised on Dempsey. And Liverpool went down to nine men three minutes later when Carragher wrestled Zamora to the ground with the forward clean through on goal. The centreback was shown a straight red card for a professional foul and stormed off down the tunnel. Benitez hauled off Dirk Kuyt and replaced him with the more defensive Daniel Ayala in an effort to shore up his decimated backline. But Clint Dempsey added a third to compound Liverpool's misery four minutes from time as Nevland sliced their defence apart to set up the American for a cool finish at the back post and leave the Reds' title dreams shredded.
Fulham: Schwarzer, Pantsil, Hughes, Hangeland, Konchesky, Dempsey, Baird, Greening (Etuhu 86), Duff (Nevland 46), Zamora, Kamara (Gera 46). Subs Not Used: Zuberbuhler, Kelly, Riise, Smalling. Booked: Baird. Goals: Zamora 24, Nevland 73, Dempsey 87.
Liverpool: Reina, Degen, Carragher, Kyrgiakos, Insua, Kuyt (Ayala 85), Mascherano, Lucas, Benayoun (Eccleston 78), Voronin, Torres (Babel 63). Subs Not Used: Gulacsi, Spearing, Plessis, Dossena. Sent Off: Degen (79), Carragher (82). Goals: Torres 42.

Kop KO ........ Carlo Ancelotti
CARLO ANCELOTTI last night piled more pressure on Rafa Benitez by ruling out Liverpool's title chances. The Chelsea boss reckons Manchester United and Arsenal are Blues' only serious rivals for the Premier League crown. He said: "We can't think about Liverpool at this moment because they are behind."
Table-topping Chelsea face United at Stamford Bridge tomorrow with a two-point advantage over Alex Ferguson's men. Liverpool are nine points off the pace in sixth spot. Ancelotti insisted: "The title is not just between Chelsea and United. No, I think Arsenal have good possibilities to arrive in first place. Arsenal have a very good team. "But we must concentrate on United. It's an important game. We will play the second team in the Premier League but it's just a game that carries three points like the others.
"We know very well that it will be a very difficult match but also a very interesting match. "I think we are doing very well at this moment, we are in good condition. We have a very good mental attitude at this moment." Ancelotti has been boosted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision to lift the Chelsea transfer ban pending further investigation into Gael Kakuta's move from Lens. But the Chelsea boss says he does not need to splash the cash. He said: "We now have this possibility to sign players but, at this moment, I'm very happy with the squad."
Katika hatua ambayo haikutegemewa Ancellotti ameanza kubwabwaja kuhusu timu ambazo hata hajacheza nazo ni bora aangalie mchezo wake wa kesho na Manure.

ARSENAL made Mick McCarthy eat his words as they reinforced their title credentials in spectacular fashion. McCarthy had cheekily claimed Arsene Wenger would be 'quaking in his boots' at the thought of taking his young Guns to Molineux.
But the Wolves boss had little to joke about after seeing own goals from Ronald Zubar and Jody Craddock hand the visitors a commanding lead inside 36 minutes. Cesc Fabregas piled the misery on just before the break and Andrey Arshavin added a touch of gloss to the scoreline in the second half. Craddock pulled one back a minute from time but it was little more than a consolation as Wolves slipped into the bottom three.

Cesc: There's more to come
Cesc Fabregas and Andrey Arshavin round off comfortable win
Heading into the game the Gunners had scored 32 goals in their opening 10 matches - a record for any club at this stage of the season and most in the top flight in 31 years - while playing some of the most exciting football in the country, if not Europe.
As if it is not satisfying enough for Arsenal, the Premier League?s top scorers, that 17 players have embroidered their names on the score sheet this season, they are now enlisting opponents to provide a few extra ones for them.
Although players across the country must dream of getting on the end of some of Arsenal?s flowing football moves, it seemed a little over generous for Wolves to provide the opening two goals last night, effectively ending the game as a contest after 36 minutes. But so intimidating is the Arsenal attack, by which one means their entire starting XI, that defenders go into Corporal Jones mode as soon as any of them cross the halfway line.
Arsenal manager Ars?ne Wenger says he has never been blessed with such attacking potential and a remarkable 36 goals from 11 games suggests he, for once, cannot be accused of overstating the talents of his young players. It was a devastating defeat for Wolves, which could have lasting effects on their psyche and their season. Wolves manager Mick McCarthy promised beforehand that he would not spend the early hours of today regretting sending out a team simply to try to stifle an Arsenal side who had scored in their previous 21 games. And his players backed up his words, even though their dominance did not survive half-an-hour.
They provided the early danger moments, with the movement of striker Kevin Doyle making Arsenal?s central pairing of Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas look as uncomfortable as they have for a while. Both managers raised eyebrows when their team sheets were handed in, McCarthy replacing Michael Kightly with Nenad Milijas and Wenger handing Aaron Ramsey only the second league start of his Arsenal career. Even more surprising was that the man he replaced was Alexandre Song, probably Arsenal?s player of the season ? okay, second best since Fabregas is back to his imperious best. But Song was soon back in his familiar role protecting the Arsenal defence, when Abou Diaby was forced off with an injury after 23 minutes.
Arsenal were ahead five minutes later. As so often this season, a team who used to turn their noses up at the very idea of getting a goal from a set piece, managed to score from a corner. Well almost, Eduardo stretching out to reach Fabregas?s corner, only for defender Ronald Zubar to beat him to it and deflect it past goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. An unfortunate goal for Wolves but one that had the effect of putting a poppy pin in a balloon. For the next 10 minutes, Arsenal sprayed around one-touch passes. Wolves were so bamboozled that they somehow allowed Ramsey and Eduardo to run clear on sole defender Jody Craddock. As Eduardo tried to play Ramsey in, Craddock backheaded the ball into his own net as McCarthy threw his head into his hands.
He was just preparing a half-time speech telling his players that Arsenal are most vulnerable when 2-0 ahead when Fabregas ended a brilliant move to score his ninth goal of the season in time added on, the move starting with right-back Bacary Sagna just outside his own area. Arsenal looked as though they could have scored at will in the second half, despite sometimes playing at the sort of pace that Manchester United?s Dimitar Berbatov would have felt at home with. But it took more defensive negligence for their fourth. No defender was anywhere near Andrei Arshavin when he collected Hennessey?s punch out from a corner and he simply rolled it into the corner. Craddock?s 89th-minute goal at least balamcd his earlier effort at the wrong end.
The Arsenal moves continued to flow. Then yet another silken passing thread landed the ball at the feet of Fabregas, who hoofed it over the bar from eight yards. Utter disbelief from everyone. The man is human after all.

Manure kweli kweli kabla ya mpambano
JOHN TERRY'S hotly-contested goal stretched Chelsea's lead at the top of the table. England skipper Terry nodded in Frank Lampard's 76th-minute free-kick. As the ball was heading for the net, dozy Didier Drogba tried flicking it in ? even though he was well offside. But Drogba missed the ball and the goal was allowed to stand. United ? missing both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the back ? bossed the early exchanges. But it was Chelsea who had the first real shot on goal. Branislav Ivanovic screamed down the flank and pulled the trigger, which Edwin van der Sar held at the near post.
United hit back in the 10th-minute, with Patrice Evra smashing a shot into the side-netting. At the other end, Drogba nodded a header wide while Frank Lampard dragged a free-kick off target. The red-hot hitman was then hacked down by Wes Brown in prime shooting territory. But Lampard wasted another free-kick, smashing his effort into the wall. On the half-hour mark, Darren Fletcher fed Ryan Giggs ? but the veteran skied his volley over Petr Cech's bar.
With the half running towards an end, Drogba burst into the box, only to send his shot into the stands. United almost carved out a breakthrough in the 47th minute when Wayne Rooney found Giggs. The winger sent a delicate chip in ? but there was no one to bundle it home. In the 50th minute, Drogba fired wide from 25 yards. Ricardo Carvalho put his body on the line, blocking a fierce shot from Fletcher moments later.A cross from Anelka then fell kindly to Lampard on the edge of the penalty area ? but the England star's shot was easily saved by Van der Sar.
Rooney should have punished Chelsea in the 66th minute when he took a return pass from Valencia on the edge of the penalty area. But the England striker sent his shot a foot wide of the far post.
Seconds later, Rooney brought a fine save from Cech with a 20-yard curler. The wobbler was destined for the top corner until the Czech international intervened. Terry then nodded in the game's only goal ? bringing howls of protest from United. Rooney was booked afterwards, and then ref Martin Atkinson booked Jonny O'Shea and Ricardo Carvalho in the 82nd minute as tempers flared. Antonio Valencia was lucky remain on the pitch after a two-footed challenge on Lampard, for which Atkinson produced a yellow card.

I blame wenger ... its all Arsenal's fault ...
DARREN FLETCHER says he is being punished by referees because of Arsene Wenger's comments about him in September. The Manchester United ace was penalised by Martin Atkinson for the free-kick which led to Chelsea's goal on Sunday. He rapped: "We are starting to see Mr Wenger's comments beginning to influence referees which is a shame." Arsenal boss Wenger accused United of playing 'anti-football' after his team lost at Old Trafford earlier in the season.
And he said one player was constantly fouling but getting away with it. That was widely assumed to be Fletcher - even though Wenger did not name names.
But the Scottish midfielder, 25, reckons it has affected the way he has been judged ever since.
Fletcher was fuming after his challenge on Ashley Cole resulted in a free-kick which resulted in Chelsea's 76th-minute winner at Stamford Bridge. He said: "Now we have to raise our game and ensure these decisions are not affecting the match. "It was clearly not a foul. I knew at the time and I have watched it again on the replay. "I back-heeled the ball and Cole just jumps up in the air and the ref gives a foul."
Defender Wes Brown felt he was fouled by Didier Drogba as John Terry headed the winner. Brown blasted: "I don't think the referee played well and we've been let down by that goal. "The decision to award the free-kick was harsh.
http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00924/Wayne_Rooney__left__924762a.jpg
RED LETTER DAY ... Rooney and Fletcher blast ref Martin Atkinson at Stamford Bridge
"Then Drogba was holding me and pulling me down, obstructing me from challenging for the ball when the free-kick came in the box. "The ref didn't see that either - what can we do about it? We felt like we did our jobs, which makes it worse when they score a goal like that. It is disappointing."
Fellow defender John O'Shea said: "The ref's angle of it and their players' reaction won them the free-kick. And then Wes was clearly fouled by Drogba as the ball came in. The ref's position was terrible. He was right behind one of the Chelsea players and was too far away to see it." United are now five points behind leaders Chelsea. O'Shea added: "There's a bit of a sour taste left but, hopefully, we'll get over that." .................................................. .........................

In a damning judgment on boss Benitez, Kop star Glen Johnson has admitted: "We're awful - and a laughing stock." Liverpool have only won once in NINE games, exactly the same as strugglers Posh. It leaves the omens looking bleak for Benitez. Right-back Johnson added: "The record sounds awful - and it is awful for a club like Liverpool."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has received a two-match touchline ban for his comments about referee Alan Wiley's fitness. The Football Association handed the 67-year-old a four-game ban, with two of those suspended until the end of the 2010-11 season. Ferguson has also been fined ?20,000 and warned about his future conduct.
He made disparaging remarks about Wiley's fitness after his side's 2-2 draw with Sunderland on 3 October. Ferguson apologised to the official for any embarrassment caused and pleaded guilty to the FA's charge of improper conduct, but requested a personal hearing. Peter Griffiths QC, chairman of the FA's four-man regulatory commission, said: "Each member of the commission recognised Sir Alex Ferguson's achievements and stature within the game.
"Having said that, it was made clear to Sir Alex that with such stature comes increased responsibilities. "The commission considered his admitted remarks, in the context in which they were made, were not just improper but were grossly improper and wholly inappropriate. He should never have said what he did say." The suspended sanction will be automatically activated should Ferguson be found guilty of a similar charge before the end of the 2010-11 season on top of any sanction imposed for that offence. Referees' union Prospect had called for Ferguson to be banned from stadiums during his team's matches following his criticism of Wiley's fitness.
Ferguson launched into a furious attack on Wiley in the wake of his side's draw against Sunderland, fuming: "The pace of the game demanded a referee who was fit. He was not fit." He later said he was sorry for any personal embarrassment caused to Wiley, claiming the comments were to highlight "what I believe to be a serious and important issue in the game". But Alan Leighton, head of Prospect, felt Ferguson's apology had been "half-hearted". He called on the Scot to receive an enhanced ban, as opposed to the standard touchline ban which allows managers to observe matches from the stands.
Leighton later told BBC Sport: "We think that the attack on Alan Wiley was an attack on his professionalism, struck at the heart of his professionalism and was totally unwarranted. "Since then we believe he has broadened out that attack to talk about the fitness of other referees and hasn't retracted that main allegation that Alan was unfit. "Some people suggest it is us picking on Sir Alex. I'm not interested in previous. If this had gone unchecked, other managers would have felt able to make similar slurs and that fundamentally brings the game into disrepute." While managers are allowed to comment on an official's performance, the FA insists any remarks must not imply bias, question their integrity or engage in what could be construed as a personal attack.
Ferguson has a history of improper conduct charges for incidents involving referees. In the 2007-08 season he was given a two-match touchline ban and fined ?5,000 for a rant at referee Mark Clattenburg during a match at Bolton. And during the last campaign he was banned for two games and fined ?10,000 after remonstrating with referee Mike Dean after a match against Hull.

ARSENAL have been given an almighty scare ? with Robin van Persie stretchered off in Italy. Red-hot hitman Van Persie was hauled off after just 15 minutes of Holland's friendly in Pescara. The Gunners' ace went to ground clutching his leg and Arsene Wenger faces an anxious wait as experts assess the injury. Without him the Dutch struggled to create chances with the game ending goalless.

DIDIER DROGBA has rocked Chelsea with news he will be out for three weeks with a broken rib. He sustained the injury in last week's win over Manchester United. Drogba joins Ashley Cole, Jose Bosingwa and Frank Lampard on the injury list.
And skipper John Terry limped out of England training yesterday with a swollen ankle, making him a doubt for the friendly with Brazil. But Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti will be more concerned about the huge Premier League clash at Arsenal in two weeks. A scan carried out by the club showed Drogba suffered only bruising after clashing with United defender Jonny Evans.
But SunSport can reveal a further X-ray done by Ivory Coast doctors confirmed the worst.
Drogba reported for international duty but will return on Monday for treatment. Chelsea hope Lampard will be back within a month after the midfielder suffered a thigh tear on England duty.
Left-back Cole has a depressed fracture of the shin and right-back Jose Bosingwa is out for three months after knee surgery. Chelsea face Wolves in the league and FC Porto in Europe before going to Arsenal.

Go for the green lights
ARSENE WENGER reveals the secrets of Arsenal's beautiful game. In an in-depth interview, the Gunners boss uncovers how he teaches his young side to play what is universally regarded as the best football in the land. For many purists, only European champions Barcelona are as pleasing on the eye as Wenger's Arsenal. Spectacular combinations based on speed of body and mind, together with technical ability and power, have made the North Londoners the nation's favourite second team. This season, more than any other since the Invincibles of 2003-04, Wenger's Gunners seem to be mounting a quietly confident title challenge - lying in the slipstream of leaders Chelsea. With 36 League goals in 11 games they have scored seven more than the Blues and 13 more than Manchester United - even though they have played one game less. Wenger's blueprint is based on intelligence, class, technique, and fitness. But the key ingredient is confidence, which makes individuals comfortable on the ball.
His players must always have choices and alternatives, which provide "solutions". The legendary French boss has revolutionised the English game since arriving from Japan 13 years ago, changing dietary and training habits as well as the lifestyle of the top professionals. But it is Arsenal's brand of football that is Wenger's biggest achievement. The 'Arsenal way' is based on off-the-ball movement, with the main objective being to give the man on the ball as many alternatives as possible. Those solutions, as Wenger calls them, mean endless problems for Arsenal's rivals. When he teaches his charges, Wenger uses what he calls "green lights" and "red lights" to show where his players must be when Arsenal are in possession. Of course, like any teacher, he wants his pupils to stay well clear of the "red light" districts on the pitch. Essentially, when an Arsenal player has the ball there must at least two possible passes he can make - the so-called green lights - and so on and so forth.
He said: "We work a lot on the potential of combinations between players. We plot it on the pitch and, once a player has the ball, there are red lights or green lights. "The collective goal is to create the most possible green lights. "That is to say to give passing solutions to the man with the ball and to leave the responsibility with that man to make the best choice possible, allowing the team to keep possession but at the same time - if possible - make the game progress towards the attack. "So you must always offer the player solutions that allow him to utilise his intelligence around the game to the maximum." The Arsenal boss, 60, accepts his biggest challenge as boss of a team that plays the 'Wenger way' is to prepare his team mentally.
Over the last few years, a lot has been made of the mental fragility of his Gunners side. Critics have argued that, while they may be easy on the eye, they are also easy to disrupt. The way Arsenal collapsed in last season's Champions League semi-final against Manchester United is a case in point. Their confidence was shattered after the Red Devils grabbed a two-goal lead inside 10 minutes in the second leg - and one of the biggest games in Arsenal's history turned into a procession for United. Speaking on French radio, Wenger continued: "For it to work, players must make themselves available and we work on that in training. "That's where top-level sport becomes really interesting, in finding a way to have the team in a position of psychological comfort so that they can offer solutions. "Because you know that, when doubt creeps in, the green lights become red lights. "Because each player takes fewer spontaneous initiatives and, all of a sudden, it's absolutely unbelievable at what speed all those lights become red and the player with the ball finds himself in the s***.
"Doubt is the key enemy of our game but, eventually, we must at the same time give our team the sense of availability. "And, on a psychological level, we must give them a taste for audacity and for developing connections between each other." Wenger insisted that to maintain the quality of Arsenal's game, he simply cannot afford to make too many changes or bring in too many players at once. During the summer, only Thomas Vermaelen was brought in to bolster the Gunners' first-team squad. He concluded: "When you change more than three players from game to game you take a technical risk. "The balance of a team doesn't depend on one player but if you change three it's a grave risk, not only in a game but also in signing players. "You change three players and bring in three or four new faces who do not know your playing philosophy and it can hit your team like the flu. "Sometimes when the players are extremely intelligent they adapt very quickly and it can also click very quickly. But it's rare."

CHELSEA recorded their 1000th league win at Stamford Bridge and made it a year since their last defeat at home. It also equalled a club record 10th home clean sheet in a row as a Florent Malouda blast, a double from Michael Essien and a second-half strike from Joe Cole, saw them romp past woeful Wolves. CHELSEA got a double lift with this win and the news that Frank Lampard should be fit to face Arsenal. Carlo Ancelotti's side sealed top spot in their Champions League group thanks to Nicolas Anelka. But the fact that Lampard will return to full training today and is expected to play at the Emirates on Sunday is another big boost.
Chelsea boss Ancelotti was delighted with the victory in Portugal but is already looking ahead to the London derby. He said: "At this moment we don't have any problems with injuries. We will try to get Lampard training, which he did on Wednesday at Cobham. He will train with the team on Thursday and we hope he will be fit for Sunday.

http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00937/Wenger_682x400_937510a.jpg
TIME TO DELIVER ... Wenger has issued a rallying
cry to his Arsenal players
ARSENE WENGER insists the "moment has come" for his Arsenal side as they prepare to face Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday. The Gunners, who have a match in hand on their title rivals, will be looking to close an eight-point gap on the Blues at the Emirates. Boss Wenger said: "Everyone will look at the game to rate our potential and I have no worries about that.
"We are ready, well focused, prepared and the confidence is good. We just want to focus on the game like we want to play it." Wenger declared: "It is a big test, yes. But that is what you want, to play these teams. "There is a period for any team to come out and show its strengths. For my team, this moment has come. "We are not any more a team that has to be considered to be young. We have the strengths and can show on Sunday that we are strong enough to compete."
Arsenal, though, must take on Chelsea without striker Robin van Persie and full-back Kieran Gibbs, while centre-back William Gallas is rated as only 50/50 to face his former club.

ARSENE WENGER last night told his Arsenal kids: It's time you grew up. The Gunners boss sees tomorrow's top-of-the-table clash with Chelsea as the defining moment in their season. Wenger warned: "We cannot be considered a young team any more. We have to show we have grown up. "There comes a period for every team when they have to show their strengths. For us, this moment has arrived.
"Chelsea will be one of our biggest tests and we have to prove we are ready, focused and confident.
"We have to win all our home games against the title fighters. If we do that, we can put ourselves in a very strong position." Wenger is haunted by memories of last season's 4-1 home defeat to Guus Hiddink's Chelsea. He added: "That result hurt us very much and was difficult to swallow. It was the nightmare week of last season." Arsenal will be without injured Robin van Persie, Abou Diaby, Gael Clichy, Nicklas Bendtner and Kieran Gibbs. But Wenger insisted: "I still believe we're strong enough to beat Chelsea.

Boys to Men .... .... ... Wenger's kids must mature
"They were quite lucky to beat Man United and I expect us to be stronger." Wenger has accused the Blues of using a legal loophole to allow New Year signings. The leaders are appealing against a transfer ban over the illegal signing of Gael Kakuta (below). Wenger said: "It is no punishment as they haven't stopped Kakuta moving. Now it suits them to appeal as they can continue to buy. If it's legal, then it's legal."

CARLOS TEVEZ'S free-kick winner re-ignited the title race as Frank Lampard's late penalty miss cost Chelsea dearly. Manchester United are just two points behind Chelsea after their neighbours City edged a fast, furious and controversial clash against the leaders.
Emmanuel Adebayor followed up a bizarre own goal opener on eight minutes by tapping City level. Then Tevez fired a 20-yard deadball past badly-positioned Chelsea keeper Petr Cech in the 56th minute.
Carlo Ancelotti's visitors, already wound up by several of referee Howard Webb's decisions, poured forward increasingly. And, after Didier Drogba was tripped by Nedum Onuoha, Lampard delayed his spot-kick run-up twice before seeing Shay Given save his tame low penalty. Drogba then finished meekly after breaking clear. And, for all Chelsea's desperate raids, it was Tevez who came closest at the death, wriggling clear on the left to force Cech into a near-post block.

Arsene Wenger believes this season?s title race most open he?s known
Ars?ne Wenger predicted yesterday that this season?s title race will be won by a team with one of the lowest points tallies in Premier League history. The Arsenal manager believes that this season?s competition is the most open that he has contested in 13 years at the club and has calculated that between 78 and 83 points will be enough to take the title.
Manchester United finished with 90 points in winning their third successive championship last season and Chelsea racked up 95 in their first title-winning season under Jos? Mourinho 4? years ago. The record for the lowest number of points required to win the Premier League is held by United with 75, which enabled them to finish seven points ahead of Newcastle United in 1997.
?Between 78 and 83 points will be enough,? Wenger said. ?If Arsenal, or anybody else, gets to 83 points, they will win the league. This season, more than ever, it looks to be a very open Premier League campaign. It is more open and because everybody has slipped up ? us at Sunderland, Man United at Burnley ? and nobody can really predict what will happen.?
Wenger is adamant that the Barclays Premier League will not be solely contested by Chelsea and United, and believes that his side and Liverpool, tomorrow?s opponents, can still win the title. ?I don?t know why it should be a two-horse race,? he said. ?Man United are two points behind Chelsea and we have a game in hand on both of them. That means normally, if we win our game in hand, we?re three points behind Man United. How can you say with 25 games to go it?s a two-horse race??I said after our game that Chelsea will drop points, and everybody looked at me thinking, ?This guy has completely lost the plot.? One week later they lost at Man City and it?s as simple as that.
?They have lost three games and they will lose more games, don?t worry. Only Arsenal went a season unbeaten, never forget that.? Alisher Usmanov, the Russian billionaire, announced yesterday that he has increased his stake in the club to 26.07 per cent by paying ?5.6 million for a further 650 shares. The Uzbekistan-born metals magnate is the club?s second-largest shareholder behind Stan Kroenke, the American who is likely to mount a full-scale takeover next May after a one-year non-trading agreement with Arsenal?s board of directors expires.
