Controversy ... Caster Semenya

THE controversy over gender row champion runner Caster Semenya deepened today ? after reports claimed sex swap tests have shown she is a HERMAPHRODITE. South African gold-medallist Semenya, 18, has both male and female organs, it was claimed.

SemAnd sources close to the International Association of Athletics Federations ? who ordered extensive tests on the teen after her amazing 800m win at the World Athletics Championships last month ? say the results mean she could still be stripped of her medal.

Testosterone

Semeenya is claimed to have NO womb or ovaries ? and has internal testes, the male sexual organs which produce testosterone. The row over Semenya's biology has caused huge divisions ? with South African politicians calling slurs she is a man "racist and sexist." Her birth certificate has the teen listed as female and urine tests showed that, despite her having higher than average male hormone levels, they are within the official limits for a woman. But an IAAF source was today quoted as saying: "There certainly is evidence now that Semenya is a hermaphrodite.

"But the trouble is the IAAF now have the whole ANC and the whole of South Africa on their backs.
"Everything is going to have to be done absolutely by the book, no question of a challenge to our findings. "There's all sorts of scans you do. This is why it's complicated. "In the past you used to do a gynaecological exam, blood test, chromosome test, whatever. "That's why the findings were challenged, because it's not quite so simple. "So what they do now is they do everything, and then they can say look, not only has she got this, she's got that and the other. "The problem for us is to avoid it being an issue now which is very personal: of the organs being a hermaphrodite, of not being a 'real' woman.

"It's very dramatic." IAAF spokesman Nick Davies was not immediately available to comment on the story. The organisation confirmed this morning that it had received the test results back and was processing the data. Semenya was ordered to take tests straight after her 800 metres gold at the World Championships in Berlin. The athlete received a heroine's welcome when she arrived back home in South Africa following the backlash. And Semenya's family have slammed the claims, saying: "It is God who made her look that way but she IS a girl."

The runner was last week given a make-over by YOU magazine ? and called the row over her gender "a joke" as she posed in make-up and a dress. South Africa's athletics chiefs this evening said they stood by her amid the claims. Athletics South Africa president Leonard Chuene said the organisation would advise the teenager to ignore all media speculation until she had been officially informed of the results of the tests. He said: "We are ignoring these claims. We cannot comment on them as we know nothing about them. "We will wait for the due process to be followed. The authorities have made a statement to say we will be informed about the results and we await that development. "We cannot get involved in gossip of this sort. Our people will speak to Caster this evening and ensure that she puts these rumours from her mind. "She is at university at the moment. She must concentrate on her studies.

"We stand fully behind her as our athlete." Semenya's family also angrily disputed the claims.
The athlete's uncle Lesiba Rammabi, 51, said her relatives were 'very humiliated' by the reports.
He said: "I believe Caster is normal, inside and out. "What does it matter whether she can have babies or not? Many people cannot have children, why else do parents adopt? Are those women not women also? "We are a normal family who looked at a child when she was born, saw that she was a girl and raised her as any other family would do. Are we now being told that we are wrong? "We are very humiliated by what has been said and do not understand how it can be true.

"This is a woman who was raised a female. She will always be female, no matter what people say."

SA chief issues Semenya apology

Athletics South Africa's president Leonard Chuene has apologised for denying knowledge of gender tests conducted on runner Caster Semenya. The tests were carried out in South Africa in August but Chuene said he wanted to protect Semenya's privacy. Semenya has been the focus of attention since she won the 800m world title last month and the sport's governing body, the IAAF, ordered fresh gender tests.

"I felt I was acting in the best interests of Semenya," said Chuene. "I believed at the time my consistent denials would help protect her. "I have however realised that it was an error of judgment and that I could have been more forthcoming with this information, even if it was difficult." Semenya first burst on to the world stage in July when she ran one minute, 56.72 seconds for the 800m in Bambous, smashing her previous personal best by more than seven seconds. The IAAF demanded Semenya take a gender test before the World Championships in Berlin amid fears she might not be able to run as a woman.

But South African officials repeatedly said tests were carried out abroad, not at home. Following the findings of initial tests, the IAAF asked South Africa to withdraw her from their team for Germany. However, the ASA insisted she should run and has since said it is certain she is female, a claim backed up by her family. Semenya went on to win the world title in another personal best time of 1.55.45 seconds, two seconds clear of defending champion Janeth Jepkosgei. The IAAF then ordered more tests, saying questions had been raised about her muscular physique, running style and recent stunning improvement in times. BBC Sport understands the test results are likely to show Semenya has an intersex status. That means that although she has been brought up as a girl and lives as a woman, she may prove to have both male and female sex characteristics.

The ASA and IAAF have been pointing fingers at each other, while South Africa's sports minister Reverend Makhenkesi Stofile threatened a "third world war" should the IAAF ban Semenya from competing. However, the ASA recently vowed to launch an inquiry into their handling of the affair prompting Chuene to make the latest revelations. Chuene said tests were carried out at a Pretoria hospital on 7 August at the behest of the IAAF, adding that it was unclear whether Semenya was informed of the nature of the examinations. "I can no longer stand before you and say that I am not aware of gender tests conducted on Caster Semenya," Chuene said.

He also said that despite medical advice and the request from the IAAF, he refused to withdraw Semenya from the World Championships because the test results were not available. "I was not going to stop her talent because of rumours," he said. "On what basis should I have withdrawn her? My only crime committed was to take a decision that she must run, and she won." Media reports in Australia earlier this month claimed a source had revealed that Semenya's test results showed her to be a hermaphrodite - someone who has some or all of the primary sex characteristics of both men and women. But Chuene said he could not confirm any reports about her gender and accused the IAAF of violating her rights and privacy. "The IAAF publicly revealed her name. The IAAF betrayed her. The IAAF has a lot to answer for," he added.

How come the minister said the other day that SA will go to war if Semenya was banned? And now, with this type of statement. It reminds me of another minister in Tanzania who said that they can not terminate the TRL contract with the Indian banianis because it will cost the nation and tarnish the image of the country. There is one reason for all of the above - number one is lack of proper education, you can be called whatever you want but not knowing simple things like the above demotes you to an imbecile. They call themselves doctors, professors etc. even our dearest president is now called a Dr. of .. ... .... I wonder a Dr. of Fisadis..

Semenya took gold after
a powerful run in Berlin's
Olympic Stadium

South Africa's controversial world 800m champion Caster Semenya could return to competition next month despite an ongoing gender test investigation. Semenya, 19, who stormed to victory in Berlin in August last year, intends to compete in a domestic series. Her coach, Michael Seme, told BBC Sport that she has kept training, but needs to race against local opposition before a return to international events. World athletics' governing body, the IAAF, has confirmed she is free to run.

Athletics South Africa has also confirmed her comeback, but is refusing to discuss dates, saying they want to keep her out of the media spotlight. Semenya was 18 when she won the 800m title. Her time of one minute, 55.45 seconds was 2.45 seconds quicker than Kenya's defending champion Janeth Jepkosgei who finished second, with Britain's Jenny Meadows taking bronze.

However, the International Association of Athletics Federations had demanded Semenya take a gender test before the World Championships because of her muscular build and rapid improvement in times, amid fears she would not be able to compete as a woman. News of the tests were made public hours before she took gold in Berlin. The IAAF has never officially suspended Semenya following her victory in Germany but says its investigations are ongoing. "We are still in the same position as before - no official IAAF comment until we have finished the inquiry - and I can't tell you how long the inquiry will take either," IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said. In November, the South African sports ministry said Semenya would be able to keep her 800m gold medal. Semenya burst on to the world stage when she ran 1.56.72 in Bambous, Mauritius, in July, smashing her previous personal best by more than seven seconds. She also broke Zola Budd's long-standing South African record and arrived in Berlin as the newly crowned African junior champion.
